Have tried to steer clear of bread, since being diagnosed, do sometimes have brown wholewheat, but rare, are wraps, bagels any better.?

I think you need to test them. It seems they behave differently with different people. I sometimes buy small multigrain bread. It's ok now and again but the slices are smaller! It's all in the head it means 2 small slices equals 1 big one! X

Not all breads are equal - Burgen bread is very low carb (you can basically subtract the amount of fibre from the total carbs). The smaller version of the loaf is, from memory about 6g per slice and the large one 9g (so not quite half, 2Cats, but 2/3 anyway).

A lot of people swear by Lidl protein rolls, they're OK, but a bit boring and not good for toasting IMHO. My personal favourite is Vogels Soya and Linseed, it's nutty and substantial, though a bit higher carb at 11g per slice. Personally I can have 2 slices with marmalade and it doesn't spike my BG much above 7. AFAIK, it's only available at Waitrose.

Why can you subtract the amount of fibre from the total carbs? In the UK the fibre has already been subtracted and is listed separately in the nutrition guide.

Personally, I swear by Lidl high protein rolls especially toasted with lashings of butter that melts right through so it drips when you bite it. I slice mine in half and just have half of one at any one meal.

There is a bread maker here in Canada that makes a lower carb bread. It's Silver Hills Sprouted Bakery. Not sure where its all available but I found it at Superstore in Lloydminster and at my local Coop. It ranges from 10 to 14g per slice. Its not cheap at about $5.00 per loaf. Personally I like the 21 seeds type. Its the lowest carb and isn't as chewy as the others.

I was told that here in Canada you subtract the fiber from the total. Reason is that fiber is a sub category under total carbs.

******, you're quite right - I realised I was taking advice from an American in believing that.

I can't fit them in the toaster without squashing and forcing them and then find they've burnt around the edges. They make a lovely sandwich though with plenty of mayonnaise to take away the dryness.

I put them under the grill in the oven. Try putting a slice of ham and some soft cheese in one and popping it in the micro wave for thirty second or so really tasty I find.

Haven't managed to find the Lidl bread yet but swear by LivLife bread, 3.8g of carbs per slice - yes the slice are small, but it tastes just like bread.

Latest pleasure, a cheese and ham toastie - 7.6g of carbs and so good!

I have been low carbing for 4 months, and every day I have either Hi-Lo bread (from selected sainsburys) or livlife bread (I order online). Both 4-5 grams carbs per slice. Also have a lot of Josephs low carb pitas, ordered from Amazon, which hardly raise my BG at all.

This week, via the forum, heard about Lidl protein rolls..............they are awesome, huge, filling, acceptable taste and texture, and again very little effect on BG.

Hi
Someone on this forum told me about Burgen bread low carp great for a sandwich and toast. I would never use anything else.
