I've recently changed my breakfast from cheese and salami to soya flakes with soya milk. The soya tastes revolting to me so I add cinnamon powder , chocolate powder and a squirt of low carb sweetener. All very low carb. My 6 year old son tried and thought it was delicious :-)

The other thing I have for breakfast is sardines but I can't see a fussy 9 year old enjoying them.

Cblake843, where do you get your soya flakes from? I really, really miss cereal in the morning and am getting fed up of eggs! What's the carb content like?

Sorry for derailing the thread a bit

Well clearly you wouldn't enforce low carbing for a child anyway.

What kind of spike are we looking at?

Rice Krispies I would suggest although try and find a not massively added sugar variety. Maybe lacto free milk also to reduce the instant carb hit.

Ah well, I'm sure there must be something similar here, I'll have a look in a couple of health food shops. Thanks for the carb info, it seems quite low :) Are they crunchy, I think that's what I miss most, crunchy food like toast, cereal, chips, all the things that I can't eat anymore!

6.9 at breakfast she had 30g of rice Rice Krispies and 125g of milk all together was 32 carbs and 2 hours later she was 17 they advice a 3 mol rise in 2 hours that was 10!! We have Always had Rice Krispies since diagnosed without a problem but the nurse thinks if its end of honeymoon what she eats will now effect bloods sugar differently

Lactose is a natural sugar and removing it lowers the total carb content.

The problem is the bolus action not coming on quick enough to deal with the high spike. If its injected 30min earlier, its action will be different. Your other option is alter the bolus in the carb ratio which will help to lower the bg level but will then carry on lowering them and might also bring on a mild hypo probably be the time 3-4hrs has gone by and will need to be sorted with a small amount of carb (like 5-10g) to stop the remaining bolus from lowering bg levels too much.

To me that high sounds like a bit of both. bolus not matching timing of food being absorbed and also not not enough bolus. Would try giving the same breakfast, at the same time with the same weight and same amount of milk but add an extra unit of bolus and monitor the effect. If still too high at the two hour mark and before next meal repeat and add another unit. The goal for children (i think) is to be around 9 at the two hour mark. Once correct you will be able to work out correct breakfast ratios (of you know basal is correct)
This was a major problem for me during my honeymoon phase, especially as my carb intake was treble that, and as ihs said at the time to get a 2 hour reading under 8, I knew I would need a 10/15 carb snack to prevent a hypo before next meal, or have less insulin but be 12/13 after two hours, no snack, and no hypo with a normal next pre meal reading. still struggled after honeymoon period on mdi.
Happy to say I now eat the same and have an after meal reading between 6~7 with no further drop, using my pump.

Ill try that Brett, nurse thinks I should avoid Rice Krispies altogether but it's her fave so I'd rather find away around it it's trying to balance health and happiness. I'm so upset this is end of honeymoon I don't no why though n can't explain why I feel like this,my husband thinks I'm mental as makes no difference she still has diabetes either way. I Spose its just felt better when I knew her pancreas was still working a little

I am not able to achieve the level of control that |Brett gets as by doing so, I would go hypo if |I was 6mmol before I eat and then 6 to 7mmol 2hrs later so for me I try to aim to be 3mmol higher at the 2hr mark and then go lower. I do however, bolus insulin as I see food on the dinnerplate in front of me as I don't always remember to bolus 15-20mins in advance.

thats exactly what I did shell, did not change my diet at all, though I must say did eat a healthy diet beforehand (many would disagree with that ) and exercised regularly with the occasional treat and occasional night out. rather than missing out on things I liked, learned to adjust my insulin to cater for what I liked/ate. Has took 2.5 years to get to where I got. Alot of battles along the way both mental and physical.
Can understand you being upset that your daughters honeymoon period probably ending, but, the good thing is that sugars tend to be more consistent in the way that the body does not cause any unexpected drops in levels due to a spluttery pancreas. It is not till after the honeymoon period finally ends that you learn correct ratios.

FWIW, rice crispies send mine through the roof, although I only found that out when I'd hit 14, 90 mins after eating them. I'm also finding it difficult to sort out something suitable for taking breakfast on the hoof. I don't recommend it (for the sake of those around you at that time in the morning), but I sometimes open a small tin of sardines in tomato and have that - mind you, that's just me.

Bulgar wheat made into a porridge doesn't cause a big rise up in bg levels. It resembles tapioca if used just on its own. I made it using some water in a saucepan brought to the boil, stired and then left for about 10mins to swell and then added some plain yogurt instead of milk. A combo of porridge oats and bulgar wheat could be made which would be even nicer. Bulgar wheat can be bought in some of the large supermarkets but is very easy to get through Asian supermarkets and is called Lapsi
