Can someone please tell me why when I have cornflakes or weetabix for breakfast my blood sugar goes up to 18+ after about an hour

I’ve been type 1 for over 40 years and I’ve never been able to eat Weetabix , I’ve looked at carb contents and adjusted insulin to suit , but it still sends my bs into orbit , I now class them as “ magic” food , and I tend not to eat “magic” foods anymore.

Both those foods are high in carbohydrate and the carbohydrate, converted into sugars by your body, is what is making your blood sugars rise. They would do the same thing to me (I don't eat either of them).

Are you diabetic? it helps people to reply to you if you can give some information about your condition etc. Welcome to the forums, by the way.

What kind of insulin regime are you on?
Do you carb count and adjust your doses based on the amount of carbs or do you take a set dose before every meal? Or are you on a twice a day mixed insulin?

For a start, I'm T2 and probably not best placed to advise a T1 who will have things to think about that I don't. So I'm just describing what I eat, not advising you or anyone that it's a must do.

That said - for breakfast, I generally just have a couple of cups of coffee, with cream.

Once a month or so I'll do an Ulster fry, minus any breads - so bacon, eggs, sausages (98%meat), mushrooms, some more eggs, and maybe some black and white puddings. These have a fair amount of oatmeal so the amount I will eat is limited. This is the sort of breakfast that means I won't want to eat again again that day and much of the next.

I tend to eat a light breakfast normally poached eggs on toas, I like shredded wheat I find that that tends to agree more with my carb insulin ratio, as with everything it’s about finding what works for you , don’t be frightened to experiment a little you will eventually find something that doesn’t put your sugars too high , I only eat breakfast very rarely I can’t really face a lot in the morning

So you're on fixed doses per meal. The amount of insulin we need for a meal depends on the amount of carbs in the meal. Lots of carbs, more insulin, little carbs, little insulin.
On fixed doses you'll have to find the amount of carbs that fits with your dose.

Are you recently diagnosed?
It may be worth asking your diabetes nurse if you can do a DAFNE course. The aim of the course is to teach people to count carbs and adjust their doses based on the carbs. https://dafne.nhs.uk/

We really can't advise you on dosing.
Please contact your diabetes nurse for guidance on this, it can be very dangerous to start experimenting by yourself.

The thing is, the amount of insulin people need for the same food varies a lot. So the amount @Ushthetaff would need for weetabix could be a massive overdose for you.

Are you speaking to your diabetes nurse regularly to go over your numbers and adjust your doses?

What I take and what you take have basically no relationship as diabetes is individual to the individual, what I would say is if you want to eat Weetabix you have to find out how much insulin you need to take speak to your diabetic team ( if you have one) and they can advise you on adjustments ,

I hear yah, “brother.” The milk it swims in don’t help much either, for me.. (lactose.)
Probably any fat content in the milk causing a “pizza effect” too?

Hi there,

We can’t advise on your personal dosage regarding insulin to carb ratios.
The insulin (Novorapid) has a general working profile which sometimes don’t compliment the food being digested?
Some people experiment with the timing of the dose. (Once the insulin dose to the carbs are calculated.)

what are your BGs like after 3/4or maybe 5 hours.. for a next meal?
