Hiya

Can anyone recommend a good cereal for breakfast for a T2 diabetic?
I currently have sultana bran but it doesnt fill me for long and im getting peckish around 10.30 :(

Also should i be eating breakfast within a certain time of waking? I usually have it two hours after waking but im not sure if i should be having it sooner?

Thank you :D

The best breakfast for a type 2 diabetic is protein, fat, and no carbs. Eat protein first and some fats. Eggs and bangers, yogurt with fresh fruit and/or nuts, etc. I have low carb yogurt with nuts, and once in a while a rough cut oatmeal with cinnamon and no sugar. With most type 2s your blood sugar is highest in the AM before eating. Wheat bread, pancakes, waffles, cereals, or juices will spike your blood sugar to the moon. I tried Starbucks new rough cut oatmeal with nuts and fresh blueberries, cinnamon, no sugar, and had only a modest rise in blood sugar. A good breakfast drink for diabetics is decaf coffee with a teaspoon of cinnamon, with half and half. Why? Coffee, even decaf, has been found to contain more antioxidants than any other commonly eaten food. Cinnamon increases glucose metabolism 20 times, or 2,000%. A substance found in only full fat dairy products called trans-palmitoleic acid reduces risk of type 2 diabetes by up to 60%.

Thanks for the informative reply. I didn't realise I should avoid cereal in a morning. I don't like coffee, egss or sausages! I usually have my breakfast at work that's why I prefer cereal. What kind of yoghurt do you suggest? And then do I just add my own fruit? Could I make my own oats and cinnamon? Is there anything I should look for in the oats? Sorry for all the questions I'm new to all this x

Hi. I agree with the posts. I do have home-made muesli with cold skimmed milk. The muesli is based on porridge oats and added nuts dried (no sugar-added) fruit and seeds. Porridge isn't ideal but I don't have too much. I have one of the only no sugar-added fruit yogurts i.e. Irish Yogurts 'Diet' brand. Yes they have sweeteners added but I have no problem with those as I know that the rumours of instant death with them is based on poor research :D

Ill look out for those yoghurts. I thought I had read not to have porridge? Is it ok if you make it yourself?

Hi cherylle

Here is a diet called Viv's Modified Atkins Diet, not just for breakfast but for all meals, which you might like to have a look at and see if it's suitable for you:
