Hi - I'm being brave tonight and moving off potatoes (had them for last 6 months in some form or other) to brown rice. I know everyone is different but what does brown rice normally do to people's blood sugars? I'm tempted to take 1 unit of insulin less than my pump suggests in case I go hypo after a hour or so. Thia way I can always adjust a couple of hrs later - good move or not?

Did half the insulin for the rice in the end. 1 hr at 9.8 and 1.5 hrs afterwards at 11.4 so just taken remainder of bolus. So after that little experiment I have found out that brown rice (40g cooked weight) has no difference on my blood sugars than new potatoes or over chips has and I can take the insulin that my pump suggests next time. Good - another carb, albeit quite a small portion, that I can tolerate for my supper. Whole wheat pasta next week!

Hi Riri!

I avoid rice except in tiny portions. Makes no difference ato me if it's white or brown rice, it sends my BG really high. I find that my BG can seem OK at two hours, but it continues to rise at three and four hours and usually means splitting my Apidra dose to take some at four hours otherwise I have high BG all night and wake up with a poor fasting BG.

I saw a coincide at midnight (to 9) - i corrected that and at 3am it was 8 so another small correction. So qute similar, it seems to cause a rise some time afterwards. What isnt as straightforward for me is that last night after the correction bolus at 1.5 hrs I came down quite rapidly and my 10.30pm was going too low for bed (i panic over hypos) so I had 2 jelly a babies and 1 rich tea. So I can't 100% say that the rise was down to the rice or the additional food!!!!!

Have you tried Basmati rice Riri, although i am no longer taking insulin to control my T2 I find it much, much better than any other rice white or brown. I was told by a dietician that it has a peculiar molecular structure that the human body can not fully break down so less of the starch is converted to glucose.

I always buy finest Indian basmati, usually a brand called Kohinoor (like the diamond) I buy it from Tesco, I'm sure other supermarkets will stock it though

Ooohh - will try it next. Thanks
(not sure what I was trying to write in the first sentence and a half of my last post - it was early doors though!! Think it should have said 'I saw an increase at midnight....')

Try brown basmati - best of both worlds.
