BS level does this sound "ok"

Still trying to get my head round this!
This morning my BS read 7.8 which I know is still high, then two hours after food it read 8.3. Looking at the info online, for T2 BS 2 hrs post food should read below 8.5, so does it sound that my levels are headed in the right direction?

I had a whole grain plain cereal for breakfast.

Just had a high protein lunch - bacon, eggs, mushrooms and tomato like suggested yesterday. So will be testing again in a while

Your 2 hour test of 8.3 was reasonable for you at the moment. Did you eat immediately after your 7.8 fasting reading, or did you have a gap?

The NICE guidelines used by the NHS are:

Non diabetics before food 4 to 5.9, after food under 7.8 at 2 hrs
Type 2's before food 4 to 7, after food under 8.5 at 2hrs.

However, it is thought these guidelines are a bit generous for type 2's. You may wish to aim for under 6 before meals and under 7.8 at 2 hours. Try to keep any difference between the immediately before reading and the 2 hour reading under 2mmol/l if you can.

I ate a little while after the fasting test, not straight away.

The numbers are slowing dropping each day so hoping that I will get to a better general level soon!

Keep up the good work. It isn't a sprint, it will take a bit of time to see real improvement, but you are obviously getting there.

cdspeed, cudos for having come off to a good start in attempting to control your diabetes :)

I don't know whether anybody gave a link to this site in a previous post: http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/index.php

This really helped me to understand what this was about (didn't myself get much - read 'any' - information when first diagnosed).

I wish you the best of success in manuevering this - and please bear in mind that this is not a sprint but a marathon ...

Kindest, annelise

Hi, I'm a newbie, I was diagnosed T2 in May and have been trying to come to terms with this illness, it' so complicated. Glad I came across this forum, you all seem to have so much knowledge!! I wasn't given my test results at diagnosis but have been testing for the past month. My starving is averageing about 6 pre meal usually in the 4's and post meal between 5.3 and 7.5 though have had couple nearer 10 but managed to identify the problem and cut it out of my diet. Any views on those numbers?

Well I tested 2hrs post lunch and got 7. Feel a bit happier with that. I also had a couple of "treats" that my wife made using substitute sugar and ground almonds instead of flour. Not bad and helped to ease the feeling that I am "missing out". Not something I will have often, just now and again.
So my 7 was after those too.

Hello Pooh and welcome.
I think you would be best to start your own thread about this. That way more people will see it and be able to comment. Your post may well get lost in and amongst this thread.

Excellent! I'm also pleased you feel better about it. Keep going, keep testing and keep learning which foods suit you and which don't. You will get there.

Thanks

I have had some carbs with my evening meal so expecting this evenings levels to be up slightly, but have cut down to what I would usually have. I'll get there.

Ok thanks. I will do that and see what happens

Its good to keep your levels lower, but its also good to watch the difference between pre and post meals as a figure.. Ie if it's 5.0 and goes to 8.0 that the difference of 3 is actually quite significant.

Its nice for all types of diabetics (t1 or T2 etc) to try and minimise the swings in levels.

Ie if you were 6.0 and rose to 8.0 then the swing was only 2.0 bg and would be a better type of food and result than one that swung you from 5.0 to 8.0.... Same post meal results but the swing levels were different and you eventually want to lower the swings in your levels. This is the same for t2's or t1's.
