Hi all, been on here a couple months now having been diagnosed end November 2014, though as I mentioned at the time the docs had known since last June and omitted to tell me !

I was started on 500mg Metformin morning and night till I saw diabetes nurse at clinic and she then doubled evening dose, therefore total 1500mg a day. Meanwhile against her wishes and advice I had started doing LCHF from the off and continue to do so. I would add I have had no stomach issues etc on the tablets whatsoever.

Anyway was back at clinic last Thursday , nurse was thrilled with my meter readings although HbA1C had risen since June though that was probably because I had been left in the dark for 6 months. She had said at previous appointment she would probably add Gliclozide (?) this appointment but after seeing readings said no, you could end up having hypos where you have such good control , but doubled Metformin in mornings instead, got to go back in 8 weeks.

This is where things started differing to previously. Started the double morning dose Fri morning , sugars all good. Went out with no dinner Saturday night as I wasn't at all hungry, had a few G & T's , BS 4.8 when I got home that night. First time I have been in the 4's !! Yesterday (Sun) woke up feeling quite off colour and couldn't eat (NOT hangover lol)., fasting sugars 6.4. In the end mid-afternoon my poor stomach was rumbling couldn't face the usual eggs, bacon etc so had one of daughter's nutrigain bars . Before I finished eating it had the most AWFUL tummy ( you know what I'm saying), did sugars 2 hrs later was 8.8. Quite a few hrs later had a salad with pilchards , pre-reading 4.7 - !! 2 hrs after 7.2. This is a meal I eat once or twice a week, and I usually have readings low 5's afterwards. 2 hours later I raced to bathroom and pretty much stayed there all evening :( This mornings 1st reading 7.2, 2 hrs post 2 scrambled eggs 7.7 ??

Is this the Metformin? The fact I missed dinner Saturday ? The fact I had a few drinks Saturday night ? Any advice or opinions would be really welcome.

Sorry sorry sorry for a long and probably boring post but I'm a little concerned as I was doing so well (although struggling now with low carbing) .

Thanks in advance , Suze x

Hi sooze, sounds to me like too big an increase in metformin, speaking personally, and from your bs' i would just take 500 met' with your meal am and pm.i halved my dose of metformin and my bloods have continued stable , i'm on lchf,

Sooze...were the pichards in tomato sauce, if they were that would put your blood readings up

It is certainly not a good idea to miss meals. My nurse says never leave eating more than 5 or 6 hours. When you do the body takes action to avoid low sugar and liver provides it. Having something to eat on a regular basis prevents this.

Metformin is well known for upsetting the stomach although most people do well on the Slow Release (SR)version. Nevertheless it is not free from adverse side effects, one of which is taste disturbance. This can put you off eating .....(are we going round in a circle here?).

The drinks shouldn't have been a problem unless they came in pints and were laden with sugar. Also, we all use the phrase "I had a few drinks". No-one ever says I had loadsa drink and got p*ssed. Hope you had a nice time.

Hi Clive yes they were but I have them at least weekly and my readings are brilliant afterwards.

Squire, it is only since this 4th Metformin tablet was added in I have had any stomach probs, prior to that I had not one single issue with them from the start. I had a few gins and slimline tonics which I have had on two occasions since diagnosis. These readings aren't horrific but they are suddenly going in the wrong direction almost overnight? And yes I had a very pleasant evening thankyou lol :)
