BS rising overnight

Last night my reading was 5.1 before going to bed. When I woke it was 7.2. This overnight rise is fairly typical of my pattern, occurring about half the time. I take Lantus in the morning after my fasting test and have my evening meal with bolus 2-3 hours before bed.

What could be causing the overnight rise? I'm sure I don't sleepwalk to raid the fridge. My DSN did say a severe hypo overnight can cause the liver to kick out glucose but I've never felt bad when waking during the night.

Any explanations?

Morning @snowleopard It's fairly normal to expect your basal requirements to change from time to time, whether through the change in the seasons, illness, stress etc many factors will cause your requirements to change over time. I find if I do hypo overnight that my morning BG reading can be 10+mmol/l. I would suggest setting your alarm for a 3am test to see what this looks like first before making any adjustments, this will then tell you what's going on and give you the information you need to make any adjustments.

What could be causing the overnight rise?

Possibly your basal insulin isn't lasting the full 24 hours so your bg levels are slowly creeping up in the hours before waking.

Much like with levemir some lantus users find they have to split-dose to get a full 24 hour coverage from their basal insulin.

I'd concur with @noblehead. It seems likely that your basal is running out. TIme to break out the old basal testing: http://mysugr.com/basal-rate-testing/
