BS up AFTER exercise!

Hi,
Am I worrying unecessarily. I am trying hard to get to grips with everything.
Something that has thrown me this morning. On getting up about 8am my BS was 4.9 , I was pleased with that.
I had breakfast of two fried eggs(in olive oil) and two slices of thinish bacon and I removed most of the fat, not all, before eating. I had a cup of tea with that.
At 10am I was at my local rehab exercise gathering for some gym work for about an hour. After that I had a cup of coffee and a chat etc.
When I got home about mid-day, I took my BS and it was 6.4 This really really amazed me. I could not understnd how it had gone up so much and following exercise!

Any ideas anyone?

Pete

When you exercise you get an adrenaline boost which causes other hormones to be released... along with a glucose dump from your liver.

but at 6.4mmol/L i wouldn't be too worried! it's not a wacky high number... last night i played badminton and my readings where over 13mmol/L afterwards!!

Stu,

Thanks for that very reassuring. The reason I asked was that almost everywhere I read that exercise is a good method of lowering the Blood Sugar level.

I was speaking to someone the other day and she told me that whenever her readings are highish she does some exercise and they come down. That is what made me a tad concerned this morning.

thanks,

pete

Pete, congratulations on achieving such good results so quickly!

I haven't found exercise to make a great deal of difference to BG levels, and I went nuts about it after diagnosis. Up at 6 a.m. jog to the pool before breakfast, swim for two hours, jog home...readings very similar before and after.

Perhaps it's the toast that's caused your BG levels to rise but, as stuboy says, you don't need to be too concerned. Keep up the good work.

I started playing tennis with BS=7.0
after 1½ hours & only having water, it was 7.9
We had one long & very tough set in nearly 2 hours losing 11/13.

This increase while I play happens often. The body must generate sugar to meet demand.

Thanks thirsty and Ian.

I was also a bit concerned what to have for breakfast especially as I was going for exercise for about an hour and had a 4.9 reading on getting up.

I was considering having some cerial which is obviously higher in carbs just in case I needed more sugar burnt to provide the energy. I was worried that if I did not do that my Bsugar would go down too low.

In the end I decided against that and eat the eggs and bacon and hope that excess fat would be burnt off in lieu of the carbs providing it.

I am learning something every day here and it helps a lot.

Thanks,

pete

Some people get spectacular liver dumps from exercise in the morning which doesn't occur later in the day so you may tinker with the timing of exercise vs. different breakfasts.

This is a small dump and well within normal numbers so not to be concerned about really, some people can shoot up 5 - 10 points purely from internal glucose release.

I did something similar the other day, after prolonged tramping around my BG was 4.2. I had a small snack and was 5.6. No way I ate enough carbs to make that happen. The bloodstream only contains around 5g glucose so even when the control system is only slightly borked you can see what appear to be major variations caused by the liver being only a few grams out in its estimations

Long term exercise reduces insulin resistance and increases the muscles' ability to eat glucose but short term the effects may vary

I've checked more in the last week or so. Playing tennis increases my BS reading. I played for 3 hours today & finished up at 7.4. (Without playing tennis, I would expect 5.5.) That was 4 hours after lunch. An hour later it was 5.3.

After playing I dropped into the health store to stock up with nuts & soya protein. The assistant told me I needed carbs for energy! I assured him I didn't. I'd had lamb steaks & veg for lunch.

You could try my savoury slices. If you want them hot, 1 min in the MW is enough - with a little ketchup, or use them as the base for toasted cheese (without the toast.)
