Hi, my bs has been in double figures for the last 5 days and I don't know how to bring it down. I also have days where I'm exhausted and very tired. Any ideas?
 
hi

if ur bloods are high then it would make u feel tired or at least it does with my son, and the way to bring ur bloods down is more insulin do u have a fast acting insulin, which one are u on perhaps u had better speak to ur DSN and see what dosage they advise u to change to. also have u checked for ketones if ur bloods have been running high???

I have tried using extra units and its not bringing it down much. The readings are mostly inbetween 10-12. I dont really suffer any effects of diabetes unless its a hypo. Im on noverapid 10/8/10.
 
what about ur background insulin maybe that needs highering best to speak to ur DSN who could advise what to change for the best

Unless there is some underlying medical cause for high Bg levels it is usually down to not enough Insulin or too many carbs. One or both may need adjusting to get the levels back on track.
 
Thanx, perhaps i will have to call my dsn. I dont carb count so it cant be that. I am in a lot of pain due to a hip/back problem but thats been going on for over a year so doubt its that.

What exactly do you mean when you say "I don't carb count"........as a Type 1 that seems to be very important going by what many here seem to do, especially if you are trying to control BG levels. The amount of carbs you consume has a direct effect on BG levels.

I suggest you need to discuss this with the DSN. Have you been told you only need to inject set amounts and that's it ?? :?
 
I did a 2 hour carb course found it very confusing with most of the 'forbidden foods' I mainly eat. Yes im on set insulin of Lantus 22 units, Novorapid 10/8/10 so I have been trying to increase the Novorapid slightly myself to try and bring down the levels

I am slightly confused here......your profile says Type 1 and you have posted in the Type 1 area, however in some of your earlier posts you post as a Type 2 asking for advice ?

Would you please clarify what Type you are, a Type 1 who has to take Insulin OR a Type 2 who is taking Insulin ? It helps everybody to give you targeted answers. :|

As for the 'forbidden' foods.....they are probably the ones which are making the Bg levels climb ? Something has to give I think.
 
Im defineatly type 1 and have to take insulin. I must have just posted in wrong areas not even realising! This has only really become a problem in the last 5 days.

If it is only in the last few days has anything changed, are you coming down with something, Women's 'problem's etc.....all can mess with Bg levels.

Not sure either how long you have been diagnosed ? If recently then it could be as a result of the 'honeymoon' period where the amount of natural Insulin you are producing will fluctuate. That too will affect Bg levels.
 
I have had it many years but only taken it seriously since aug of last year after suffering with dka. The only thing I can think of is I received an appt last week for an epidural due on Tues next week which im worried about!
 
Ah ! Stress.......that too can seriously affect Bg levels. I think we may be getting somewhere, in which case an adjustment of the dose of Insulin may well be beneficial. Just small increases may do the trick. Difficult to stop worrying sometimes.

If you are not sure about this please discuss with the DSN. The levels need to be bought down from those highs.
 
Thanx a lot, if they dont come down ill give her a ring. Altho i have just had a hypo now, ill see what happens from here.
 


Could be your basal insulin needs to increase also Sarah, I would ring your dsn and discuss your control with them.

Hi sarah,

If I were you I would try and stick with teh carb ounting thing if you can....that way, no foods are forbidden, they just need more insulin. Obviously,, we should all eat healthyily, and as low carb as we feel right for us..but if you "just hae to have "X" food, then knowing how much extra insulin you have to give yourself is better than just eating it and ignoring it. Myy weakness is those treat size bags of malteaser 15 g of carbs..on my carb insulin rato that is an extra 1 and half units.

Another question (whispered) are you pregnant...that make your BG rise in teh early days. If so, get that appointment ASAP!
 
No im not pregnant.

I dont think carb counting is for me too many foods that I enjoy I would have to avoid and things that are good for me I dont like. it was all too complicated!
 
we carb count and for dylan nothing is banned in fact hes able to have more treats than he did before carb counting for example he had an easter egg so the other night he had tea and then had half an easter egg for pudding he enjoyed every mouthful and i loved watching him eat it not sure if things are done differently for adults tho we were not told to restrict carbs but just to count them which has been working well for us

I really don't understand how someone could survive on insulin without carb counting. I inject different amounts for every meal, if I only injected a set amount each time I'd have serious hypos one day and massively high blood sugars the next. No foods are forbidden, eg if you eat a lot of sugar, you increase the insulin you inject.

The food you need to avoid are the same whether you carb count or not. If you choose to eat lots of unhealthy food now, you can still choose to eat the same when carb counting, it's not any more unhealthy when carb counting (it is still unhealthy though).
