BSL Trands during the day

I have diabetes Type II and I am taking gliclazide 120 mg daily and Lantus insulin 36 units daily. My last HBA 1C was 7.2 and my diabetic nurse was not overly concerned with this.

I normally take a fasting BSL and that generally sits around 4 to 6 mmol. It seems that my health care professionals are only interested in the HBA 1C results.

I have recently received my new Accu-Chek Mobile meter and I find the charting that I can read on the computer very interesting and in my case somewhat disturbing. Probably because it is a new gadget I have been testing my blood during the day where normally I wouldn't. I am concerned that my BSL is between 14 and 16 mmol two hours after a meal.

Firstly I am wondering if I should test my blood two hours after every meal. And should I be overly concerned with the results that I am getting. Personally I would like to see this below 9 mmol.

My next six monthly diabetic assessment is in September. I would like to try to get things a little bit better controlled than what it is and should my diabetic nurse be taking more interest in my home testing results and not just rely on HBA 1C or am I getting paranoid?

Hi Robert42,

Yes 14 - 16 after meals is too high, under 8.5 would be far better.
If you are on insulin and gliclazide do you drive? If so you should definitely be testing before you drive as that is a DVLA requirement (and during long journeys).

If you test before and 2 hours after meals you will get an idea of what is best to eat to control your levels better.

Angie thank you very much for your reply. I don't drive any more so that's not a problem. So what your saying is that I should test before and two hours after every meal that makes a lot of testing in a day. Should I do this for just a while and try to get the adjustment in my diet?

hi robert i am type 2 test before meals then i test 2 hrs later.
i am glad i am testing i have been on metformin 2 x 1000mg per day now for no reason my sugars have gone haywire.
but i would not have known if i was not checking also writing down what i eat.
are you eating your carbs are you having brown bread,brown rice porridge.
keep away from white flour products cereals exept porridge & weetabix, eat fruit.
i was told no need to test bought my own meter i was 28 so i was checking & still am been put on gliziclide now 1 with breakfast as my nurse said you can be eating the right things but your diabetes could be getting worse through no fault of our own.
