Hi all

Just wanted to update as we've had a bit of a crazy week. My ketones did improve but then returned later in the week and I just didn't feel right. I was admitted with severe dehydration on Friday 12th and William Michael Morris was delivered by emergency C on the Saturday. No one seems sure what happened but personally I think I had an infection!

Anyhow the little dude has been in neonatal all week but has been awesome and we're taking him home tomorrow. We're really blessed.

But I have noticed that my diabetes has dropped down the priority list this week even though I've had amazing nurses supporting us in neonatal. I'm therefore nervous about how it will be when we get home and I'm on my own. Do you guys who've been through it have any tips and advice on how to manage? I'm so scared of hypos when it's just the 2 of us.

Thanks

Kerri

Congratulations! If your breastfeeding make sure to have something to treat hypos close to hand as I found I get hypoing whilst feeding! Also although advised to go back to pre pregnancy ratios I actually had to reduce both my fast acting and background insulin doses as I was still hypoing! Good luck you will be fine once you get into a routine! xxx

Congratulations KG79!

It's very easy to get caught up running around after baby. You may find a bit of a rollercoaster with changing hormones, lack of sleep, breastfeeding, carry/pushing baby around (it's hilly where I live!) etc. Make sure you test regularly and always have hypo treatments and snacks to hand.

I used to test in the night when up feeding baby and always before giving them a bath. You have to make time to look after yourself so that you are in good position to look after baby.

Most of all, enjoy, they grow quickly!

Congratulations :)

That sounds like a stressful time, but I hope you can relax a bit now your son is here and safe :)

I had quite a few hypos after delivery - quick, hot-feeling ones. I kept Lucozade by me at all times as I needed the quickness of it. I even put a little bottle in the bathroom and made a little hypo store by my chair where I'd feed my son - Lucozade, dextrose, biscuits, cereal bars, and a bottle of water for hydration.

The advice above about testing lots is very good. Your body will still be adjusting and looking after a little baby is a lot of work and a surprising lot of exercise! When I'm by myself with baby, I test frequently and still keep hypo treatments nearby.

You'll be fine :) Enjoy your little boy :)

Congrats @KG79 glad you are both doing well! I can't offer tips or advice as I haven't been through it myself yet but do make sure you look after yourself as your little man is relying on you now :) xx

Congratulations! Defo keep your glucose and test kit nearby if you have had a section. Keep testing a lot. My ratios are still below pre pregnancy now 4m after having my twins. If you are bf or expressing it also makes your sugars drop so I didn't really need much bolus at all.
Remember you need to look after you otherwise you can't look after William.
Ps the night feeds are also hard but gives you chance to check the sugars xx

Take things easy and monitor carefully. I find that it takes a little whilefor my insulin to half and go lower and then it can change again as feeding patterns change. All you can do is check frequently. Also always treat the hypo first. The baby can wait 5 mins for a feed. Much better than being dropped.

Do you have anyone who can help you/look after you/look in on you each day? This is a difficult time for anyone, doubly so after a cs and triply so with type 1. Having meals made, someone to help walk the baby so you can sleep undisturbed will all help recovery.

Congratulations!!

Babies take a lot of your time, my advise is to get at least two meters, keep one upstairs, one downstairs as you won't want to keep running up and down.

keep a bottle of water and snacks close to hand (upstairs and down)
test regularly - or whenever you get a chance - in early days you could do it after each feed or nappy change as that will be very frequent and it will put your mind to rest that your levels are OK.

enjoy your little one

Congratulations, glad your both ok, test your blood more often, especially when you do the night feeds, good luck.
