Burgen Bread Query - Newbie Question

I worked in Victory House a few years ago so I was close to M&S back door then! Noa are...not as good as they like to think they are IMHO. Never found their bread very tasty at all so haven't looked for a while TBH. They're in the old market hall in Douglas now (used to be Harry's Café). Must check to see if they have a low-carb option next time I venture into the Big City!

While we are discussing the IOM, how many, like me, didn't realise that it wasn't in the UK or the EU?

As answered above! I did as my Mum was Manx, but most folk don't understand. Or think we are the Isle of Wight. #sigh#. Mann is a special place, if you don't mind being marooned on a smallish island. We love it, been here 17 years.

I don't mind the thread drift - as long as interesting!

PS - Listlad - Lloyds?

No I was pretty much next door to Victory House until June 2017. So it was down the steps past Cafe Delight, then to the back door of M and S.

I did like the NHS there, Neil. But they hadn’t come across LCHF as a dietary solution to T2 diabetes from what I could see at the time. I found they gave me a lot of time, which was great. How about now, Neil? Do they talk the language of LCHF now?

Well my GP is new to the island (and young), but as yet hasn't really said too much - I see him again on Friday. The diabetic nurse was.....a little difficult to work out. I got the impression he either thought I wasn't taking it seriously, or he was just not interested. He did recommend this forum! Gave little dietary advice, just to cut down on portions and I can't really recall, to be fair to him, if he mentioned low carb in anything other than passing. My DESMOND isn't until October so by then I will have self-educated to a higher level - I have already! I will still go though, it may help.

I am of course taking this VERY seriously, and have reduced my HbA1c from 51 to 41 and lost a stone in 7 weeks. Next time I see him I hope for a better discussion, it was all a bit of a blur at that time. I got a meter off a diabetic colleague she had stopped using due to expensive strips, so have tested a lot and got a grip on things. Carbs! Given how serious diabetic complications can be it seems false economy not to issue them on prescription. I have a kidney thing that is abnormal so want to discuss that with the GP, it may be my BP meds affect it. But BP is now good at 120/73.

NHS here did me proud when I mashed my foot (Lisfranc injury - V. painful) and earlier with hip surgery. It's better than the average Manxie would have you believe, they haven't experienced the UK version!

Update.

Although the management were no help, a nice staff member this morning helped after I went to find the shelf empty yet again. There is more due later today, and she is going to put some aside for me to collect later. At last!

The Burgen is a fair size loaf and as only I eat it, I halve it and put some in the freezer. So a whole loaf lasts a couple of weeks, in fact I end up throwing a few slices away as I don’t eat it fast enough.

I'm off down to the bright lights of Ramsey to get it soon, I'll see how big the loaves are. Mrs NHN will likely eat it too if there's too much, but it will make a nice change for lunch if I can handle it. I use wholemeal pitta breads at the moment which are OK BG wise.

Burgen is actually a nice loaf.

The Burgen Soya and Linseed loaf comes in two sizes, the normal one has 44g slices and I think the small version has 33g slices (that's total weight not carbs).

Why not just freeze the whole loaf, like I always do? Then I just help myself to a frozen slice when I want it. I always toast mine, so frozen isn't a problem, but a slice will defrost very quickly especially after a short blast in the microwave. We have always frozen our bread this way. I don't remember not doing. Mr Blue still eats his awful white bread, and his loaves sit alongside mine in the freezer. None wasted at all.

Only Sainsburys in my town sell Burgen, and only the larger of the two sizes. However, they haven't had any for a few months now so I assume they have stopped stocking it. I did once manage to find the smaller size in a different town when we were on holiday. I am now on Hovis Lower Carbs, which is smaller, and has less carbs.

Success! Finally, I managed to get three loaves this evening, and as someone said above, it is indeed a very tasty bread. It was even tastier when you haven't had as much as a crumb of bread for two months!

Thanks all for guidance and comments.

Haha. Island life eh? Nice one. Yes, quite a tasty loaf.

I do the same with our breads as I only have a couple of slices a week.
