Byetta not making a difference; should I take insulin?

Feeling just miserable. Before pregnancy was on Byetta which didn't work very well and I kept my BG down (ish) by v low carb diet. The got pregnant and was given insulin. Had 10 months of just perfect BG levels and, apart from pregnancy stuff, felt brilliant.

After baby was born, hospital told me I had to come off insulin and go back to Byetta. I begged not to, explained that it hadn't been very effective in the past but they wouldn't budge as 'your blood test results show a good HbA1C'. I spoke to a couple of different peeps and even after explaining that those blood tests were taken after insulin regime, still same answer. Hospital told me to come back in 6 months.

After a few weeks of Byetta and fasting BG of around 15 or 16, I phoned the practice nurse in tears, begging to be able to take some insulin, at least for my wedding day, so I didn't feel so ******. They gave me Gliclazide. It worked to some extent and I felt less ******.

Sitting here now, with BG at 21.6 and that is with the full dose of Byetta, without any food since lunch and, I have to admit, two tablets of Gliclazide rather than the one that I was allowed.
There are left over insulin pens still in the fridge, which I haven't disposed of yet. And I am so tempted just to take some to get it down a little. I know I shouldn't.

Got an appointment with the nurse in 3 weeks. In the meantime, am a newly wed, with a newborn baby; insomnia, no libido whatsoever (I know too much sharing, but considering I've only been married a week, my poor husband is having to be very understanding!!); permanent exhaustion; dodgy vision as my BG has gone up;contant thirst; wearing a groove in the carpet to the toilet; other choice delights, which I wont share, but the ladies will understand :(.

Going back to very low (ie practically no) carb after our holiday next week to try to do something, but right now, feeling pretty fed up.
Would you take the insulin if you were in my position?

Hi, your current meds are obviously not working for you at present, and glucose levels this high are harmful. I suggest making an appointment with your GP tomorrow. 3 weeks is too long to wait and see the practice nurse. good luck.

Thanks I will do.
Ending this pity party now, it's not at all like me to be so negative.
Have been persuing the forums and as there are a number of folks on byetta and insulin, I think I will challenge the info I was given that I can't do both as they aren't licensed together.

The way you're being treated is terrible.

Just yesterday I came off the phone and everyone I've spoken to from the hospital where I had my Laproscopy and operation done last week to the receptionist at my GP have all said my recent readings of 18 are too high!

The GP called me back yesterday and discussed my symptoms and wants to see me today at 10am to check me over. She told me to keep a close eye on my readings and if I begin to feel worse get myself to A&E. What I'm trying to show is at least the difference in attitudes.

I can't believe they're going to keep you waiting for 3 weeks at levels that high. I hope you got an earlier GP appointment since your post.

Maybe call nhs24 on this for guidance and more immediate referral to your local A&E - especially if you're feeling so bad.

My mum's a T2 and was put on insulin 4 years after her diagnosis as nothing was working she was swinging from about 9 to 24.

p.s yes I know exactly what you mean re the other 'choice delights' I've been perscribed a MONTH worth of treatment because of suffering for nearly a year.

Good luck and please let us know how you're getting on.
