Byetta not working as expected

Hi I am 58 and have had type 2 diabetes for about 15 years. This was controlled by insulin, metformin and gliclizide.

18 months ago I was put onto BYETTA to replace the Humalog, and initially it seemed like the best thing ever. However, about 6 months ago my weight started to increase again and worse, my sugar levels also started to increase. My hba1c was 6.6 then 7.7 and today it was 8.8!!My diet hasn't changed that much but as I have put on 4kgs since August, something must be wrong.

My fear is that they will take me off the Byetta and make me reurn to Humalog with the predicted weight gain

Does anyone have any idea what is happening, and more so what can I do about it??? :(

Stuart

Hi Stuarth.
Welcome to the forum.

This is an unusual event so I need some more information from you. First of all you say that your diet hasn't changed that much....that implies that some of it has. Can you give us an example of a typical daily food intake, breakfast, lunch, dinner and any snacks.

Did anything in your lifestyle change around 6 mths ago ?

Can you give us your Bg readings for fasting, before meals, 2 hrs after meals please ? Just a couple of days will do.

This information will help us to possibly help you.

Hi Stuart, if its any comfort thats EXACTLY what happened with me.

Byetta didn't really work that well for me at the start and surely in the middle and especially the end of my term usng it t was more of a hindrence than a help.

I have the added hassle to being allergic to most insulins, lantus being the only one which I can tollerate, but as its slow acting the amount I have to take is absurd (well to me anyway :))

I wouldn't overly worry about the weight gain (although agree it is annoying), you may very well be one of the ones for whom Byetta just doesn't work!!!!!

Leona.

Thanks Leona. To be perfectly honest I feel no different if I take all this bloody medication and if I dont. Sometimes I think its there to placate rather than actually help. What an old cynic I am!!

The most annoying thing is that Byetta did work initially!!

Oh well, I guess things could be worse. You must find it very frustrating have to use a slow release insulin. How much and how often?

Hi Stuart,

I am currently taking Lantus and i'm on 140 units daily, this increases every 3 days by 6-10 units. I'm insulin resistant which I spose doesn't help !!!!! :) I have been warned by my endo that this will go considerably higher .... he even told me there had been people on 1000 unts per day (hope I aint one of them soon lol)

As before, I am unfortunately allergic to fast acting insulins and cannot take them, which also adds the the level of Lantus that I take grrrrrrrrrr

When I was on Byetta I felt worse on it, I felt semi normal when I missed it ....... hence the fact the doc just gave up on it !!!!!!

Hey Stuart,

I would like to add my 2 cents also... I was on metformin 2500 and byetta and had ok BG control (8.5) and lost a bit of weight. I added Glipizide to bring BG down. My BG did not go down much but my weight starting to go up, then platue. Now I am up 2 stones and Bg is up.... so I feel your pain.

Good luck,

pleo
