Byetta / Victoza

Hi All,

I have been T2 since Jan 2009, took my docs a fair while to diagnose me and my sugar levels were in the high 30's by the time they did. So was feeling very ill with all the nasty symptoms. I have been struggling ever since to get them under control with oral medication, diet and exercise I'm still not there, at my last doc appointment I asked about Byetta / Victoza at first they seemed to say I would be suitable but when I went back they said no and put me on another tablet, I am now on Metformin, gliclazide and pioglitazone and my sugar levels are still above 15. Does anyone know what the criteria for Byetta / Victoza is. I am back at the docs on friday and would like to be prepared to argue that one of these is the right thing for me. I have had enough of feeling so tired and ill, it effecting my life and my childrens life which is so unfair to them.

Thanks hope someone can help me.

Don't quote me, but I thing being overweight and on more than one oral meds without much success will meet all the criteria.

The Victoza was the one to get me back to the required 'below7%' in the HbA1c tables and it was my last chance before going onto insulin ... its a blooming miracle drug as far as I'm concerned!!

Thanks, I am over weight for my size I would say obese even. Do you get many side effects? Does it really help with weight loss too. My last Blood test results came back at 10.7 so they need to help me.

There are two seperate threads in the 'Diabetes Medication and Drugs' section. Byetta is a huge thread and almost every question you can think of has been asked there and usually answered. There is also a seperate thread which gives the technical information about the drug.
POSSIBLE side effects are documented in both threads along with hints and tips. Have a read there.

In the same section is another thread entitled Victoza. It is growing fast and there are a growing band on here on it now.

I use Byetta and have to say this drug has changed my life !

As for the criteria they are much the same for both drugs. You need to have a BMI in excess of 35, be on maximum doseage of oral anti-Diabetic drugs - not just one, and your Bg levels poorly controlled. There are some Consultants who routinely ignore the criteria so you will have to hope that you fit the requirements. Good luck to you.

hi Jimmy77, yep changed my life too. You need to work out your body mass index and you can find internet programmes for doing that. The criteria for me getting it was being obese and being unable to control BG with medication. It seems most but not all loose weight, I certainly did but you do have to make an effort to change the way you eat. I also had a few unpleasant side effects, the worst being nausea but I'm more or less past that now. My very high hba1c (10.5) came down to 6. Blood pressure has come down too.

I had been on Metformin 2000mg a day for the best of 3 years with not much improvement atall. It was getting to the point where I wouldn't even bother taking my meds because I couldn't see any changes so thought I was wasting my time. It is only over the past 6 months I have started to get a grip on things again and make an effort to get myself sorted. I had a good chat with my Gp and told him how I didn't think the Metformin was making any difference; he agreed that something else was needed. He suggested a wealth of tablets but also mentioned Victoza without any prompt from me. I have a huge fear of needles (which I am sure people on here will be getting sick of hearing about  ) but decided to give it a shot (no pun intended). My BMI is 34, i am 26 years old and haven’t had a any real improvements over the past 3 years or so - that’s my situation and I was offered Victoza without much discussion. I really hope you can get it, I've only been on it for two days but already my blood sugars are the lowest they have EVER been and I haven’t really had any major side effects.
