It wasn't to long ago they stopped doing that. Stopped the riff raff! When you played darts, pool snooker etc at these clubs the away team got signed in.Can't think why! I once went "oop north" in the 80's when husband was playing the working mens club circuit I took a friend with me and we stood at the bar in one club for ages before anyone told us that women weren't served at the bar. We had to get a member to get us a drink when we wanted another.
Hodge is offal of mutton often served cold. Not aware that where hodge-lodge comes from.@nosher8355 , excuse my ignorance but what's hodge? I'm guessing it's just a mixture of leftovers or something - is that where 'hodge-podge' comes from?
Where I live we are lucky to have two traditional greengrocers, two proper butchers (one which would pass for a charcuterie in France), two hardware stores, numerous bakeries. We do use them, but possibly not enough, and I wouldn't want to lose them. Sound like a series of Ladybird book covers (that reminds me, I have a few spoof covers of those, let me know if you want me to put them up).
Me too. Now you're making me feel old and that's not allowed after I've done 2 1/2 hours of exercise!I still remember in the not too distant past smoking in aircraft ! Going to the pub and ordering a "light & lager", shoving 2p in phone box after hearing the "pips", the little white dot that stayed in the centre of your TV for ages after switching it off !
The walk home from school! I remember that! I was a latch key kid!The National Anthem being played at the end of the cinema film, when TV closed for the night, at pub throwing out time, at the end of other social occasions, when everyone stood up straight and sang.
The old 9" Bush TV sets, and if you were posh you had one in a cabinet, probably bought in 1953 for the Queen's coronation. Oh yes, and the coronation mugs given to every school child. I broke mine on the way home - walking with friends of course, no school runs in those days.
Had one explode on my leg! Tiny scar!As a child of the 60s the closest I can get to your gas lamps are gas lamps in caravans. They always struck me as a dangerous thing, but then I was too scared to strike a match until I was well into my teens.
Oh yes, I remember those. And the pop van. Dandelion and burdock and cream soda if you were lucky too!Yay...the corona delivery van.....that's what started me off on fizzy drinks.....and diabetes.
And free plastic cowboys and Indians toys in the cornflakes packs
Don't forget Liebfraumilch!I only really liked the Cream Soda!
I daren't ask by which route Mo
Party 4s and Party 7s still de rigueur at uni in the 70s.
Hirondelle wine? Blue Nun? Mateus Rose?

Oh yes!!!! Me too, happy days! How many pubs still have bar billiards tables - loved that game.
KFCWhat's wrong with drive ins? I use the KFC one.
Your Dad was right wasn't he.
And me, first home. Had to do the shops or other chores before the family rolled in. If anything wasn't done, well, I would kop it one way or another. The walk home from school! I remember that! I was a latch key kid!
@andy 1234 , talking of roaming dogs, white dog poo! Why don't we have that anymore?!
This is a whole new world to me! Bagwash, community laundry, chores? So this is the second thread today to make me feel lazy. And me, first home. Had to do the shops or other chores before the family rolled in. If anything wasn't done, well, I would kop it one way or another.
My worst nightmare would be having to go the bagwash by myself or the community laundry. My mum would make a show of me and how embarrassing is that?
Try clearing the ashes from the hearth and then building a fire in the freezing cold in winter. At weekends, this was done very early, as my dad was an early riser. On schooldays I was first so I got to do the fire and other chores. This is a whole new world to me! Bagwash, community laundry, chores? So this is the second thread today to make me feel lazy.
yes, I did the fire occasionally at weekends, but it was never 'my job' as such.
Never been on a farm!OK, I wasn't lazy. I helped a lot, but I worked alongside my Mum and Dad, because we had a farm and they were always home when I got in. So I s'pose it's the latch key kid bit that's different really. It didn't feel like work because it was time with the family too.
Oh right...so you had time to play and watch footie? Some of us were mucking out the pigs and cows while you were playing footie!Never been on a farm!
Total city kid! Worked in a factory for forty years, nearest I got to grass was playing or watching footie!
What's a pig? Cow? No idea!Oh right...so you had time to play and watch footie? Some of us were mucking out the pigs and cows while you were playing footie!
Stinky things that kick and bite if you get too closeWhat's a pig? Cow? No idea!
