Type of diabetes
Type 1
Hi all out there, I new to the this type of open communications with those of a similar disposition so please bear with me and my errors. I am a type 1 diabetic and have been injecting since I was ten years old that I'm pleased to say was forty seven years ago, yes I've had a few 'up's and downs' in my time but on the whole I'm quite well managed/ balanced. I have read with great interest mention from some of you fellow sufferer out there that you use a 'constant glucose monitoring device' , I have enquired about these at my biannual diabetic clinic checkups but have been stone walled. Obviously they are available to some but why not to others, I don't mind injecting myself but numerous blood testings are just not my thing. Surely if I'm to remain a healthy working tax payer anything that would help keep this up would benefit myself and in the long run the coffers of the state.
Any advice/comments on how to get myself a funded CGM device would be greatly appreciated. N

Congratulations on 47 years and welcome to the forum! As it stands at the moment, there is only one way to get a funded CGM. That is to have proven that you have no hypo awareness (e.g. you'll have been banned from driving as a result).

It will still be a fight to get it but it is at least accepted under the NICE guidelines now. The question is, do you qualify @nasim ?

Sadly Tim's right, if you qualify you have some chance of getting one, but if you're managing ok with finger prick tests then the 'if it ain't broke why fix it' saying applies. If only the saying 'It works, but could work better by....' was used more!

Thanks for your input, I like your last saying there "it works, but could work better" and getting banned from driving, well that would be annoying. Never mind I'll keep badgering them, I am willing to cover some of the costs involved. Oh well thanks anyway. N

If you are willing to contribute towards a CGM, why not have a look at the Freestyle Libre system.

It can give a result as many times as you want to test, no finger pricking & as long as you don't leave it more than 8 hours between tests you'll get readings from through the night. You'll still need to finger prick before driving but generally I've found the accuracy to be close enough to trust it and not finger prick more often.

Hi Nasim, I was diagnosed 46 years ago aged 12 so we are pretty close timeline wise.

I decided a few years ago that I had to find a way to fund my CGM, to be honest it's the best thing I ever did.

Some of us are lucky enough to be able to afford the tech and some not unfortunately. If you can find a spare £100ish you can get a Libre 'reader' and a sensor that will work for 2 weeks and give yourself a break from finger pricks (and give yourself loads of info!). Some of us just buy a £50 sensor whenever we can afford to rather than using it every week, but if you're already scrimping and scraping at the end of the month then it's still an awful lot of money. I have used birthday/xmas money to buy sensors as I'd rather have that than some random 'stuff'', depending on your situation you could tell friends/family that you'd rather give your fingers a break than have a new jumper and some socks :-)
