Hi Guys

After a long time 8 years since diagnosed having more or less zero carbs I’m sharing a box of Swiss chocolates once a week with my wife and the next day my BS is normal . How dangerous is this ?

What are your blood sugar readings before eating the chocolate, 1,2 and even 3 hours afterwards? These readings are much more relevant than figures from the following day.

See if it’s 8.5 -9 for 2-4 hours after the chocs once a week is that dangerous . My blood sugars outwith this are normal between 4-5.6 as no carbs and no sugar .

It’s all about risk isn’t it. Personally I wouldn’t let my sugars go that high for that long, indeed I rarely go anywhere near 9. No one can predict who will and who won’t get complications from regular and prolonged spikes, but it wouldn’t be something I’d consider doing. I like my feet hands and kidneys in good condition!

and even more for me, protecting my eyesight!

@Rog do what you want to do! You are probably 'spiking' and having the same unseen effects as your wife, diabetic or not - spikes and sugar are not great for anyone.
Although I am still in the early days of LADA/T1 I am an advocate of low carb, I already realise the mental stress this can cause 'doing the right thing, all the time', but I really believe that you have to balance your mental and your physical health - do we all want to live forever, miserable, bored but relatively healthy, or is your current and long-term mental health worth indulging now? Only you know the value of these treats.
Live fast, die young? Not quite, but I think there is a lot to be said for being happy. Like I've said here before, if I get to my 90s I am only going to eat cake and boiled sweets, like a proper old lady, ****** the consequences!

had a box of the Lindt white chocolate 2 hours ago . Just done a BS 7.2

Did you test before the chocolate and at the one hour mark? Then a test at the three hour mark could be useful too.

Be warned that a lot will depend on what you ate before and when, if you did any exercise/used your muscles after eating the chocs etc, and the '2hr' may not be the end of the spike - this is where the graphs from a Libre come into their own.

The 7.2 could be the peak, or coming down after a quick high spike, finger-pricking can't tell you this unless you measure every 15 mins, and no-one wants to do that!

If you check out @glucosegoddess on instagram there's a lot of the science explained in simple terms and hacks that will reduce the effects for everyone.

PS. A couple of squares of Lindt 90% choc is the best and for me isn't detectable on my graph

Was 4.7 before chocs then 7.2 after two hours then 6.5 after two hours 20 mins

We did go out for a 30 minute walk after consuming the chocs ( I eat nothing else ) and I can eat the 90% lindts a whole bar actually however although 6.5 after two hours I feel
Like **** the next day so stopped it .

So a rise of 2.5 mmols/l, higher than is recommended.

It's good to 'coat your carbs' with fats, so maybe chop some chocolates up with a couple of berries and a tablespoon or 2 of greek yogurt to minimise the BG rise, then the 30 minute walk. Better still, have a salad-based dinner beforehand and the chocs as 'pudding'; but never eat them on an empty stomach.
