Hi All,

I'm a 2nd year mental health nursing student who just opted out of my second placement this year due to high risk status (leaving a deficit of 300 hours to be made up next year).

My DSN advised me as T1DM we aren't more at risk of getting coronavirus, it just pushes us into DKA more so test regularly for ketones and sick day rules.

I don't feel I can lose any more hours by opting out next year.

Is anyone else in the same position? I also have high blood pressure which is treated with medication.

Many thanks in advance.

Neal

There's an interesting thread here by @LooperCat , who is in a similar situation to you but was being prevented from going out to work by her managers.

There's an awesome calculator there that gives you your covid risk, in terms of defining your covid age as the age a non-diabetic would be if they were at the same risk as you. As I remember being diabetic adds 8 years to your covid age (if you have a hba1c under a certain level), but if you're a young student nurse then your risk is still very very low. (By young I mean under 30).

Everyone's at some risk from covid, it's up to each one of us to decide how much risk we are comfortable with.

Good luck.
