Calorie counting

Hey there,

I'm quite over weight and wasnt really managing my diabetes well, so have started calorie counting. It's going ok, but where I'm used to eating a lot more, I'm struggling with my insulin doses and having a lot of hypos.

I just wondered if anyone else has tried this or has any advice?

Thanks

Hi, I wouldn't count calories myself, I'd look into counting carbs instead, if you get myfitnesspal ap you will find counting either a lot easier, my wife has been counting calories on various diets for 15 years and just gets heavier, but it's only an opinion, please look into the carbs it's worked wonders for me, there is a lot of info on this forum about it, good luck

I agree. Counting carbs is much more beneficial (also doesn't leave you feeling like you're starving to death!!). Much easier to control bs and combat hypos. An all round winner really. Low gi foods are also hugely benefocial

Hi, the same thing happened to me. Cut back on your insulin till you can find the right balance. Might take a bit off trial and error but you should be able to figure it out , good luck.

I'm type 1 and have returned to calorie counting after realising that I have been, unconsciously , under counting what I was eating and the portion sizes had crept up.

I use myfitnesspal.com to record exactly what I'm eating at each meal, weighing everything to ensure the correct amounts. The website breaks down the ingredients to calories, carbs, fats and protein. Using my carb ratios, (1 unit insulin to 10grams carb through the day & 1.5 unit per 10 grams evening) it's been quite easy not to overdose on the novorrapid.

The weight is starting to fall away using the calorie counting & increased exercise.

Good luck with it.
