bigots,knowalls,
Was Diagnosed T1 9 years ago,but had the following "event" in Feb 2009 and can't seem to get back to where I was.....
I started a new exercise regime, have always been a keen walker/ cyclist but decided to have a go at one of Davina McCalls exercise DVD's one evening then had dinner ,tested before bed and reading was in single figures. However, I woke at 2am with heart palpatations and feeling extremely cold, tested bsl was 7 so not a hypo. I thought I was having a stroke/heart attack so wife called paramedics who attended.BP was a little high, and pulse was about 90 but after a while Icalmed down.So thought I may have just overdid the exercise
However since my "event" I have not been able to get back to my "normal" self. Went to GP who diagnosed anxiety and was prescribed Perindopril for BP.Now finding it difficult to work out if am hypo or hyper hence lots of tests each day. Am having regular giddy spells...when I walk its like I am veering over to one side, developed tinnitus,am unable to relax, seem to have a permanent chattering of teeth, when I tense my muscles have a shaking sensation which I don't recall having before, vision problems, dry eyes and throat, ultra sensitive hearing. I would like to know what actually happended but obviously know this Q may never be answered. I seem to get fobbed off by GP's..I would prefer if they would say ok yes you do have some kind of complication this what it is and either no there is no recovery or yes you can recover given time. Feel as though I am "stuck" at a point at which I can't progress. Are my symptoms a complication or is just acute anxiety.Any ideas?? :?: :?:

I'm no medic so can't say what your event was about and it seems that you did wisely had it checked out..

Did you wake up on your own or did your wife wake you up?

It may have been that you actually did have an hypo.. But either your liver had just dumped it's store to bring you out or the excess insulin had burnt itself out and the dribble of glucogen from your liver was starting to build up your correct BG levels and you caught it all earlier to mask what had happened..

It seems that this one event has made you very anxious and worried, and at the moment you might be having difficulty with controling your diabetes to several factors..

I see that you are taking BP tablets, are you sure that this isn't dropping your BG too low at times causing the dizzy spells It's natural for BP to flucuate during the day so may be worth requesting a 27/4 BP monitor to be used for a couple of days to see what is actually happening..

Because you are becoming anxious and concerned in not knowing what exactly happened etc, this will release stress hormones these will also effect your BG and make it more difficult to control, as your anxiety flucuates through the day so will the stress hormones and your BG..

I think that you do need to go back to your doctor, explain what you've told us you need to have your question answered because the not knowing is causing such an anxiety that it's effecting your diabetic control and could be the cause behind your symptoms you are suffering.. And you need to have it sorted so that you can settle and get back to normal..

Give the Somogyi effect a Google and see if the descriptions offered could be you . . and if I were you I would ask my GP to refer me to a specialist and not be fobbed off.
I used to suffer with an occassional night arrhythmia so I can understand your anxiety... it can be extremely frightening which only adds to the problem.

Hi Paul,
Welcome to the forum. :)
I read both your posts, and some of the symptoms you are having sound similar to some I experienced while on Lantus & Humalog. Unfortunaty I am still suffering the heart-palpitations (ectopic beats) that started while I was on Lantus. While on Lantus, I was woken one morning with a rapid heartbeat of 140bpm, my husband called paramedics as I would not stop it myself. I was taken 2 hospital on 3 other occasions with chest pain, breathing difficulty and admitted overnight for suspected heart-attack once. I began experiencing unfamiliar anxiety symptoms within a couple of months of going on Lantus., then pain in my arms/shoulder/ chest area, I felt like I was going to have a fit sometimes,I'd developed an intermittent tremor; felt I couldn't breath or swallow properly quite often, like my throat was tight. I didnt know what the hell was going on and was sent to countless specialists, and misdiagnosed with fibromyalgia  All the problems I suffered, have been widely reported by others, notebly the anxiety and rapid-heart/palpitations.. I know you're not on Lantus, but who's to say your problem is not a side-effect from Novorapid or even Insulatard? People have been reporting side-effects on insulins for years, since the introduction of "human" insulins in the 80s.
Before someone(u know who u are LOL) jumps down my throat as per, I must state that this is only a suggestion, there could be many other reasons for the problems you are experiencing and you should get it checked out with your GP.
Meanwhile you could do worse than contact the IDDT (insulin dependent diabetes trust) who can offer you advice and support. They are particularly knowledgable about insulin-related issues.http://www.iddt.org/here-to-help/contact-us/
Best of luck
Jus :D

:D Thanks so much for the interest and advice. Its good to contact people who have similar problems. I woke up having the "attack". I have had a 24 hour heart monitor which came back normal and a CAT scan which was also normal.Ithink I will ask for a referral to Ear,Nose and throat Specialist and contact the various Organisations that people have suggested. What a brilliant website with such helpful and caring people. Thanks guys and gals :)
