Hi everyone
I am actually a new poster on here but hope if its O.K. if I ask a question right away
the thing is my husband was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in march of this year
he was given metformin and some advice on diet then we went to stay with
his sister for a couple of months in sunny spain thinking this would help,
the thing is when he was first diagnosed he actually weighed 21stone (and a little bit)
he has since lost four and a half stone which has really helped him and he looks much better
though his blood pressure is still v. high
I must be honest though the lost weight was a great surprise all he gave up were his sweeties and snacks,
he has always eaten well he is a big chap so it was the bits and peices that had put his weight up plus inactivity with a badly injured knee, to be truthful we put down a lot of the weight loss to his medication,
anyway, since we got back he has had two blood tests and they have come back saying he
has a very low blood count 80 when it should be 130 (so the doc said!)
the thing is he has had so much back pain while we have been away and after looking this up
on the internet, we had put this down to the metformin as some people have said it has caused them aches and pains,
anyhow the doctor has now given him SITAGLIPTIN or its other name is Januvia
one 100mg once a aday, starting tomorrow he has been on two 500mg metformin a day, but she told him to stop these and take the new ones,
my question is, is it common for Metformin to cause a low blood count?
I have looked on the net and as yet havent found anything to say this is true,
they are testing his pee as his backache is so bad as also his "bits" on the right hand side
has really been aching for months he has now said,
has anyone else out there who suffers with Diabetes had any problems like this?
we have now got to wait three weeks to see if his blood starts clotting again
to see if these new ones work,
any advice would be so very welcome guys, all I am getting so far on the net
are the worse case senarios and I cant even begin to tell him these so am keeping my mouth shut
until I have something proactive to tell him.... :?
anyway thanks for reading...
