I tested my blood sugar after eating sushi and crisps (0.5%) at 6pm, at 7.30pm tested my levels which 18.1, I then had dinner starter and main course and drank water. It was then 5.1. Can someone tell me why this is happening?

I am a regualar gym user.

Hello:)

Can you clear a few things up please?

What was 0.5%?
What was your BG before the sushi and crisps?
When was your 5.1mmol/L reading exactly?
What did you have for dinner?
Are you taking any medication for your diabetes?

Before we get the above questions answered, all I can say is that sushi rice can give a noticeable BG spike.

As with all post-meal BG spikes, the most important part is where your BG lands two hours after the start of a meal.

0.5 was the sugar in crisps I was eating with sushi. Hour after was 6.7 then a hour after that was 18.1 was drinking plenty of water in that time. Was hungry so had dinner which was bread fish with potatoes egg and more fish. Testes it was 5.1 I do have stomach issue at the moment could this be the reason for the werid reading

Do you know how much fat was in your meal, sushi and crisps combined. Fat can delay the BG rise/spike post-meal. So if there was a high fat content in your meal, this could explain why you were okay after one your and then 18.1mmol/L two hours after.

The other reason is that your hands had not been washed prior to the test which gave you the high reading? If you have traces of foodstuffs on your finger tips then you're readings can be severely exaggerated, this is why washing of hands is recommended. It's partly due to hygiene as well of course. Did you re-test after your 18.1mmol/L reading to establish whether it was a wild card?

It is possible your BG got that high, and if it did - then it could be time to start monitoring your carbohydrate intake closer and look for lower GI alternatives to what's causing these huge BG spikes.

Good luck!

I was thinking food residue on your fingers could have caused the 18.1 reading, did you wash your hands before testing. Do you often see readings that high?

I do have a stomach pain going on which could be the reason for high sugar reading
