I may be wrong here (probably am) but I was under the impression that our body will react to a much reduced diet by signaling the liver to release more glucose for a ready supply of muscle power.

By the same way of thinking, a sudden very low carb diet could produce the same effect on a body used to being swamped in an excess of glucose and have the liver react by producing glucose to make for the lack of it. . . . does that make any sense?

I should also add that if you are still running high by the morning, go and see the Dr with some urgency and get it sortred out with whatever it takes.

You say you've been on the diet 4 days
Have you checked BG each day?
Is there truly NO change?
This seems odd, but I suppose your liver could be dumping. Once it's got rid of its glycogen, that will stop.
However, iagreee on makng an appointment and if that's not immediate, get some kettostix from the pharmacy.High BG is bad enough, but combined with high ketones, it constitues a medical emergency.
Have you been diagnosed T1 or T2?
It may be the diagnosis needs checking too.

DEbs,

I see on your profile that you are diet only and currently take no meds. I think it would be wise to book a appointment with your gp or diabetes nurse to discuss your control, as you are aware 17.1 is on the high-side and if unchanged, this can be dangerous.

Good luck!

Hi Debs

Don't be too disheartened, as it's early days, as it seems that you not at the moment tacking any medication for the diabetes, then it could be that this needs to be started, so you need to speak to your GP/DSN as soon as possible, take you BG results and food diary with you, this will give them a better picture to what is happening, and the best way forward...

Yes it does in deed, my apology. Debi, still see your gp or dsn as it is certain your meds need some adjustment.

Hi Debi, have i read your post correctly ??? are you 44?? and had type 2 db for 16 years?? As far as i was always told and i was diagnosed when i was 22, under 40 is always type 1 and on insulin, no messing about with tablets or diet straight on the injection - i had to do my first injection in front of the dsn, i would check with your gp hun, as for the loosing weight!!!!! I too am trying - very trying, i have been told if you are diabetic you can join weight watchers for free if you speak to your gp you get vouchers, i've put over 2 stone on in 12 months ! and am on meds for depression, statins and kidney meds all due to the sugers x good luck - go and get checked again x

Hi never you know what i think your right as a child i couldnt stop drinking and people used to say to my mum you sure shes not diabetic,Then with my first child aged 24 they finding loads of sugar in my urine but done nothing about it and said dont worry. My son was at 34 weeks and weighted 7lb 2 so i dread to think what he would have been gone full time.

when i had my secound child i had moved from bedfordshire to hertfordshire so a different hospital they spotted it week 8 of my pregnancy and i controoled it by diet and lost 3 stone. I put that all back on then my third time round i was put on insulin and had to take loads .

how would they be able to tell now if i am t1 or t2

There are several tests that can been done one is the c-peptide and the other is called GAD, they can give a clearer pciture to type..

If you've haven taken any type of medication for a long while, if you had been T1 you would have been in serious trouble a long before now, even with Slow on set T1 it would be likely that you would have struggled and been on medication that wasn't working..

I have two friends who are T2 diabetics, and they are both under 40, one is stil in her 20's...
