I was diagnosed type 2 about a year ago now. My mum is type 1 . SInce I have found out I have been really bad. I havent watched my diet, and I dont take my metformin regulary, basically ive been a lazy idiot and now im worried. I have made an appointment with my doctor for friday. I keep getting leg cramps and pins and needles in my feet and tips of my fingers, now I have been looking and it sounds like nerve damage :-( Im so scared and I know its my own fault but what do I do now???

Hi ladybird,

It sounds as though you have been in denial. It is not easy being diagnosed and it takes some longer than others to accept it. Most of us regret our lapses and you need to take it more seriously. Don't beat yourself up about it all. You are not the first and won't be the last to behave like this.

My advice would be to get back on track asap. Nerve damage can be reversed with good control. If you need any advice with diet then please ask as many questions as necessary.

Catherine.

I went to my Dr 10 years ago with numbness in one thigh. He suspected, & diagnosed diabetes. For me, that thigh serves as an early warning system for problems, including reaction to simvastatin, & intense debilitating pain which I believe was peripheral neuropathy. Before it was officially diagnosed, I found this forum & advice from some members to abandon the official "50% starchy carb diet for diebetes." It is probable that your problems are symptoms of high blood sugar, & will go away with good control. Certainly good control will only be beneficial.

I cut the carbs, & within 3 months the pains had gone & I was fully active again. As a bonus, I lost a stone & cholesterol dropped. Chronic tiredness was greatly reduced also. My signature shows the drop in HbA1c over 2 years. At 70 I play tennis & table tennis with no concessions for age.

Let us know how things go with the doctor on Friday. There are always folk here who listen and offer advice and support - you are not alone! :D

Hi Ladybird3,

I suffered all those sort of things - and other things too - but they have all disappeared altogether since I sorted out my blood glucose levels.

Good luck and best wishes - John

It's never too late, ladybird.
If you give some careful thought to your diet, cut out the sugars and the starches, you will begin to turn things around immediately. Good luck!
