I use dunlopillows too. I sleep in the recovery position mostly (sort of half-way between on my front and on my side) and like a firm pillow with my head well raised - usually 2 dunlopillows with the top one scrunched into double so my head is curved upwards. Why this doesn't play hell with my spine I don't know - I have lumbar spinal stenosis (now confirmed) and you would think that this position would press on the nerves even more, but it doesn't.
I have a very firm mattress, too, on a bed I had converted from spring to slatted base. I've been sleeping on softer beds for 4 nights, with 'ordinary' pillows, and my poor back certainly felt it! One night back in my own bed, and I'm almost back to normal.
I hadn't heard about memory foam pillows specifically designed for side-sleepers - I might have a look around for those. Thanks for the tip, Anna29.
