Can diabetes alone cause memory problems?

I have high blood pressure, which is controlled by medication and I also have diabetes. I am probably overweight by around 1 stone (14lbs). The other day I woke up and checked my emails on my mobile phone. I was dumbfounded to get an email 'confirming my Amazon order' for some book. I have no recollection at all of placing the order, though the book was something I was interested in.

I am a bit worried because of this total blackout. I don't think the blood pressure is the cause of my memory problem because as far as I know it was under control. So my question is can diabetes be the reason for memory loss like this? I haven't tested my bg lately as I have run out of strips, but I'm on metformin and another drug.

Has anyone else experienced something like this?
 
It can certainly cause brain fog which in me sometimes causes my thinking just to 'stop' like I have walked into a brick wall. I think you need to get some more strips to test your BG levels. Are you sure it's not a mistake by Amazon, or someone purporting to be Amazon (I have had some of those emails before, but not saying I have actually ordered a book)? I have experienced this kind of forgetfulness in the past. Usually when I have been very stressed or ill or after having had an anaesthetic. I have put it down to my age - I am quite a bit older than you. Usually it has happened when my blood pressure was too high - have you had yours checked recently?
 

It was definately an order from Amazon and no one could have made it but me. It was a book I was going to buy in the future so I just let the order stand. I have not had my blood pressure tested lately so it could be due to that. I will get some more strips and get my blood pressure checked asap. This was quite a frightening experience.
 
Yes I am sure it was ne0h, that's why I responded. It may have just been 'one of those things', maybe you ordered it when you were tired and simply forgot, it's easy to do. But it's best to get the other things checked just in case there is something else wrong because then you can get it sorted before anything more major happens, so you are doing the right thing. Take care.
 
I am type 2 on insulin and my diabetes has been poorly managed for number of years. I also suffer from Sleep Aponea but the treatment (CPAP) doesn't work for me. In the last year or so my forgetfullness and confusion has got worse (e.g. forgetting my home phone number) and I was referred to the Mental helath clinic for a dementia test. Thankfully I haven't got early stage dementia. The consultant strongly suspects that my memory issues are a combination of diabetes and sleep aponea plus other medication I'm on.

If you are falling asleep during the day, you may need to be referred to a sleep clinic.
 
Ne0h, I wish to ask whether you are on statins (for cholesterol)?

- When they were pushed on me, I found that I got a very muddled memory - not a thing I needed in my then very active working life. So I have gone off them.

when I was on simvastatin I had a memory loss it really frightend me luckily my granddaughter is a pharmacist and told me it could have been the statin since stopping it no problems.

A few years ago I was on statins for a very short time (around two months). I stopped taking them because they caused muscle weakness. I try to manage cholesterol by diet and getting regular exercise.
 
I also had memory loss on statins. It felt like I had lost whole days.
 
Very long term, there is a theory that Alzheimer's might be related to diabetes (Type 2), in the sense of having a common cause. I don't know much more about it than that, I just heard there is a theory.
 

Are you sure the email was genuine? I've had these from companies like Amazon (supposedly) and they've been nothing more than a scam, if you don't remember ordering it you probably didn't.
 
I have had e mails supposedly from amazon about an order I have made. The first time I thought I don't remember ordering anything so checked my orders on amazon and there was nothing there. Have you checked your orders to see if it is genuine.

I read an article recently that said they may end up calling Alzheimer's type 3.
 


Amazon.co.uk actually have details on their site about phishing or scam emails that look like they are from Amazon-but not...

If you have ordered something from Amazon it will be in your list of orders on their site, whether you recall ordering or not. My memory fails now and then but in my case I put it down to stress, but I guess BG levels may have something to do with it too.

Just to be safe. Don't click on any links in the email... Go to your account from your browser to check the account in question... If the email is a fraud? You will be giving away account information & such like.... But you knew that any way..!

Not exactly, though that's the headline screaming from the tabloids.

What they did is took under review the proportion of people getting side effects, thinking there may be problems with the study's evidence for the incidence of side effects being as high as 20 percent. So they are saying it is lower, not that there are no side effects. And it was the editor of the journal that published the study, not the BMA as such.

20 percent side effects, or more, seems to match the proportion of people on here who have had side effects from statins. Anecdotally.
 
May be proportionate, but where did this 20% info come from in first place?

No good getting it from MHRA as GP's do not inform MHRA as they should....i certainly have proof of this, and if any other persons asked their GP if they had informed the MHRA of the side effect 80% of the GP's would say no.
