Many years ago I read somewhere that diabetes can be triggered by the individual being shocked by an issue in their lives. Is there an official position on this? What do other diabetics think on this, do you believe that your diabetes was triggered by a situation in your life that caused such distress and shock?

I know (quite well) someone who has Type 1 and swears it was as a direct result of the trauma of his dad dying - only came on 6 months after the funeral..........but ive not seen anything that confirms this can happen officially

Wouldn't be a bit surprised if a shock or trauma could cause diabetes. If a sudden shock can many problems, such as suffering a heart attack, hair falling out, paralysis, even dying, umpteen known conditions, then I guess a sudden shock can cause diabetes. I'm guessing a shock causes a hormonal reaction. I know of a young mother whose milk dried up when she was told to get back home asap as her house was on fire.

Here's an article that you might find interesting.

As I was experiencing a lot of stress with both work and personal life around the time of my diagnosis I have always believed it was a contributing factor to my diagnosis just before my 54th birthday. Most consultants will stick to the official line of a viral trigger causing the immune system to go awry.

No idea, though I find it interesting that my alopecia (another immune condition) started early on in the covid lockdown (when I was unfortunately not furloughed, but rather working all hours and doing half a week of home schooling), which was directly preceded by a rather traumatic divorce. Double whammy!

i was diagnosed when I was 17 in 1979 , I can remember varying different theories about why, and trauma was definitely one of them alongside it being hereditary.never really got a definitive answer. Personally I was knocked unconscious during a five a side football match 2 weeks prior to my diagnosis ! I’m not saying it is the reason but whenever I look back , I tend to relate it to that incident ,

My understanding is that you have the propensity for diabetes from an early age.
And when we are shocked or stressed our body is more susceptible to illness.

Sounds like my experience. Looking back, the markers for T2 were already there, and there is a genetic bias, but a really traumatic time in hospital must have tipped me over the edge.
