Can eating before a glucose test result in a false result?

My fiance didn't plan to get her glucose tested when she went to the doctor last week. She had breakfast and lunch and had some whole fruit for snacks in between.

When we got to the doctor the doctor decided to have a few blood tests done and one was the glucose test. Is it possible that non-fasting could give a false test result for diabetes 2, the nurses didn't ask if she had been fasting.
 
Hba1c it's fine. I would seriously question the fruit. What is she eating in a typical day?
 
I doubt they expected her to fast well beyond lunch, as most people don't. The glucose test, there's a few different ones... Do you know if it was a HbA1c? The average of 3 months? Because if it was, then whether it's fasted or not won't make a difference. Do you know the number?

She sometimes have about 100g of black berries or strawberries for breakfast. Or some low Gi toast with two eggs to keep her full longer. Then she will have two fruit snacks during the day. Lunch will be a piece of meat from the previous night with some fresh veggie salad. And evenings meat with no fat with vegies and little bit of starch.

Reason I ask is that the doctor called us last week Friday to let her know that she has tested positive for Diabetes 2. She had the normal breakfast and lunch but had two nectarines and a banana during the day as well
 
We will omly find out this aftwrnokn with a followup vistit to the doctor.
 
Make sure you get the hba1c number. This gives you a starting point.

Toast of any colour is not good for T2s. Berries are ok but ditch other fruit.

Come back to us once you have been to the doctor. We can advise on diet.
 
You might want to look at getting a blood glucose monitor. Check the prices of test strips, they are your running cost.

Does she need to drop a little weight?
 
OK looks like HbA1c is a recommended diagnostic tool so try and get a print out of all the results that the doctor has used to make the diagnosis.

You're lucky to be in the land of Prof Tim Noakes who has many great videos and books on treating T2 with diet.

You will find out at the appointment, but if it took a few days or a week for the Dr to come back to you it will likely have been a proper blood test (where they take a sample of blood to lab) then it was a HBA1C - this is not affected by eating and is normaly pretty conclusive.

If it was a finger prick test, where the nurse did a prick of the finger and used a portable meter to test the blood this can be affected by eating - the results from that test are instant and would normally be discussed there and then. In any case the next step if the finger prick showed possible diabetes would be a proper blood test any way.
