Welll...

(are you sitting comfortably? ;) )

All a fasting blood glucose test does, is measure your blood glucose as a snapshot in time, at that particular moment.

But then throughout the day we eat, drink, exercise and sleep, and our blood glucose rises and falls accordingly.

The reason that the NHS uses fasting blood glucose tests as a handy diagnositic tool is because they are a) cheap (MUCH cheaper than running a 2 hours Glucose Tolerance Test), b) convenient (ditto), and can give a good indication of whether the patient is having issues with glucose tolerance.

The drawbacks are that fasting blood glucose tests can vary hugely on a day to day basis (mine ranges from 5.8 up to 11+) depending on stress, sleep deprivation, longterm diet, diet the day before, exercise (short and longterm), time test was taken, wyhether your liver has dumped any glucose into the bloodstream to make up for no breakfast, and activity levels the morning of the test...

Personally I feel that diagnosing pre diabetes or diabetes using a fasting test is about as accurate as pinning the tail on a donkey.

If you want to find out what your blood glucose is at different times of the day you will need to get a meter and test it yourself.

You mentioned that you are having thirst and widdle symptoms too - there are reasons other than diabetes why you could have these symptoms, so maybe a few home tests could help.

If you buy a meter, please shop around first. Sometimes you think you are getting a good deal, only to find that the strip purchases are ridiculously high. I use the SD Codefree, it is cheap and cheerful but about a 1/3 of the running costs of some of the snazzier versions.

Hope that helps.
