Can GP surgery refuse me service?

hi everyone,

I'm currently looking for a new GP surgery and I found one local to me a few weeks ago that has diabetic services and are taking new patients.

I went through the registration process last week and everything went through fine, or so I thought until I got a phone call last Thursady from the practice manager who informed me that the surgery does not cater to people "like me" with "special requirements" but even before I could ask for clarification on the matter she hung up on me and when I ring back the receptionist lady just tells me to ring back later. I don't have any special requirements..

I don't understand how they can turn me away when they are letting other people register without any problems.

I would suggest calling the surgery again in the morning and to ask to speak with the practice manager.

There have been some articles in the press in recent years about GP's cancelling the registration of patients that are perceived as troublesome, in most cases for very minor issues. So yes, I believe that they do technically have the legal right to turn down a registrattion but you also probably have a right to receive a full explanation.

Could you perhaps write to the Practice Manager and copy it to the Senior Partner. Good luck.

Are you under the care of a hospital diabetes team? If you are then make sure you mention this to the gp surgery when you ring them back.

Contact NHS England or your local CCG Chief Officer. They are responsible for finding you a GP. Tell themeverything that has happened... tell them if you are in need of medication and ask them to sort within 48hrs.

Sorry, I have chronic health issues and I moved and had none of the bother you have. I was just having radiotherapy at the time etc.

Is it a large practice or a one man band GP?
