Hi, am feeling my cautiously now around my new diagnosis, read the carb counter last night , am getting my head round that, but can anyone give tips on what to eat when on nights and not do too much damage, have been taking a burgen sandwich, a sachet of porridge and Ryvita(thats in case I feel a snack urge) and usually drink sugar free Sprite. Will doing nights mess my readings up in a big way ? Also, have been told to be careful of getting infections, which cant say I do other than the odd sinus trouble, I usually carry on as normal cos hate fuss and drs(even though mine by and large are lovely), do I need to fuss a little now ??. Feeling more positive now since finding your forum, but need to admit to feeling a bit mind boggled by the enormity of diabetes, dont think I'd taken in what it really means, but as you rightly say, one step at a time. Thanks for listening to me waffling, and I remain very appreciative of the support. Regards, Julia.

Hi Julia, work out how much carbs you are taking to work with you. Do you test two hours after you have eaten ?
If you do hard physical work then your bg can fluctuate during the night and you need to balance the need for carbs against the work load to keep your blood sugar levels stable through the night. Testing during the night will give you some idea.
I would check the porridge for carb content as this could be very high !
I usually take a salad sandwich ( my two slices of bread for the week !) and some fruit.

Thanks Sue, couldn't see in carb counter, unless being dozy, how many carbs a day I am allowed, can you help there ?, would like a benchmark to work with. No, my nights are sedentary, only do them on a relief basis, and am waiting for delivery of strips so can start testing properly, but will be asking my gp if he will prescribe some too. Think your advice helped as only got up for loo twice in first 2hrs, then slept 4hrs quite peacefully, lovely to get to work not feeling punch drunk. Regards, Julia.

Work out how many carbs you eat in a day then aim to slowly reduce them down to about 100gm per day. If you find this works and you can stick to it and it brings down your blood sugar levels then fine. If you still need to get your blood sugar levels down however you can reduce this even further to 50 gm. per day.

Julia,
A nice alternative to a sandwich is a wrap. Low carb Megastore ( on-line) sell some which are good. You do have to pay P&P though, so more expensive than Burgen loaf from supermarket.

That's one of the things that went away quickly for me too after I'd started to sort out my blood glucose levels.

I'd never even considered that it might have been related to diabetes - I'd always thought that it was due to getting old and/or prostrate problems.
