my 21 month old son was dyanoised with type 1 only 1 week ago now. it has been Hell we came home from the hospital on Friday and on Saturday morning we were both being sick every where. we pick up a bug from the hospital. so not only had I not got use to things I has illness to add to the insulin levels too. I've dealt with a 1 hypo already and last night trying to put the gel stuff on his month as he won't eat so his levels are too low to go to bed with. I hate nap or bed times I'm just so scared. to make it all worse he just is so fussy and won't eat. will things get any better I just can't see it!

Can't really advice you since I don't have kids myself but want to send you a big hug! Things will get better, I know a couple of children that was diagnosed that young and they're fine. It's difficult to get it right at first, can't even imagine what it must be like trying to get it right for someone else. If you feel like it's beyond you at the moment you should contact your diabetes doc/nurse, if you haven't got one yet contact your family doc for help. Best of luck to you Kellyboo boo and to your son.

What an awful start for you all - I'm so sorry. Hopefully by now things have calmed down. It will get better! You should be getting lots of support from your care team at this stage, so if you're not, don't be afraid to shout for it.

Just a thought since he's not eating much: if he's given bolus insulin, give it to him right after the meal. That way you can adjust the dose to what he's actually eaten. Let us know how you're doing!

Hay yer that is what out nurse has been telling us to do. I just find all the figure things abit confusing. Meal times are taking me about an hour cause he just picks at things. I now feel abit house bound as by the time he has morning nap then gets up at about 12/12.30 an hour for lunch I don't have much time left as I also have to be home for about 4 to start cooking dinner. If he eats later he is too tired to eat and the whole low at bed time thing begins. Sorry to sound so negative I just feel abit over welmed x

Hi
I know exactly how you feel, my little girl was 18 months when she was diagnosed and is now nearly 3. And from my experience it does get better and easier. Take each day as it comes and deal with each reading at a time. Once I got over the initial shock of the diagnoses I got more confident with controlling natalia's diabetes, as we have no choice. Life does get back to 'normal' and diabetes doesn't stop us doing things, it just takes more planning. You and little one will be fine, just take it all in your stride!
