Day 27...

Back to RAW:D

Am BS 4.8

Had my lovely veggie juice for breakfast - lots of spinach, green beans, cuspamber, celery, half a lime, carrot. No insulin.

8:30am 1 cantaloupe melon. 1 unit NR

11am BS 6.4 banana-frenzy! Two bananas and two little red bananas. FINALLY they're ripe after sitting in the fruit bowl for a couple of weeks. Tasted nice, a bit lighter and sweeter than normal bananas, but to be honest not so different that they were worth the extra money. 4 units NR

Lunch 1pm BS 5.3 one papaya (delicous, get the tree-ripened ones from Tesco, they are the best!) and a big salad of almonds, vine tomatoes, alfafa sprouts and spinach. No insulin

3pm BS 7.3 two red apples 2 units NR

4pm Stopped off at the hospital to collect my half unit Novopen. It's a kids'pen!!! Very neon and "cool". Am really excited about being able to use half units. A pain because it will need getting used to again, but I'm sure it will be worth it in the end.

5pm got home and decided I felt like some exercise. Drank a little carton of orange juice for fuel and then went to jump around on my mini-trampoline for half an hour with the radio on loud. So much fun!!! but had forgotten what a good workout the trampoline was and I know I will ache tomorrow. Also did a weights workout. Very unlike me to want to work out after work.

7:30 dinner BS 6.4 A bit high - was surprised as I had just exercised. Am finding, though, that my BS doesn't start falling until an hour or so after I have finished exercising. And then it REALLY starts falling. Wonder why that is? Had such a nice dinner - butternut squash and parsley "rice" with a salad of romaine lettuce, cuspamber, carrot and avocado. YUM! Even though I think cooked and junk food is going to taste good, raw always tastes best. No insulin

8pm 3 units levemir, one less to take into account the early evening exercise.

bedtime BS 6.7

Back on track for day 28 :D

Day 28...

am reading BS 7.5 :?::?::?: What? How did that happen? I never go up overnight - unless I have eaten something very fatty or heavy like a curry the night before and my stomach is still digesting and kicking out glucose after I go to bed. And I didn't eat like that last night. And I exercised yesterday evening. Am wondering if I hypoed without realising it in the night. Have a headache this morning, which isn't normal. Any ideas, anyone?

Had a veggie juice for breakfast - lots of kale, cuspamber, celery, green beans, half a lime, some ginger. Gave 1 unit NR

10am BS 5.8 1/4 watermelon and 1/2 pineapple. 4 units NR

1pm lunch BS 4.1 HUNGRY!!! 4 oranges, rest of butternut squash rice, salad and avocado from last night. 2.5 units NR

4pm BS 4.8 one banana and a bulb of fennel 1 unit NR

6:30pm dinner BS 5.8 bit high...could have made use of my half units and given 1.5 at 4pm! 2 dates and a big courgette and iceberg salad with a tahini/lemon/lime/orange juice dressing. And a handful of raisins (not raw!). 1.5 units NR

8pm 4 units levemir

bedtime BS 7.8

See you tomorrow...

Day 29...

1am BS 3.8 :evil:Not sure why that happened, went to bed at a decent level. Ate a sugar tablet and two dried apricots, wanted to avoid being too high in the morning but at the same time did not want to be hypoing again in the night.

6am BS 6.2 - messed that up but not too bad! Better than having another night-hypo anyway. Ate a banana. No insulin.

6:30am had planned to go for a bike ride, but VERY windy, so decided to go for a walk instead. Walked for 30 mins then walked with a bit of running added in for the next 30. Calf seems to be getting better :D Then did some weights.

9am breakfast - was in a real rush, no time to juice and anyway, found that I didn't have any celery or cuspamber left  Grabbed half a galia melon instead. No insulin.

11am BS 6.6 2 bananas. 2.5 units of NR

1pm lunch BS 4.5 1/2 pineapple and a big salad with aduki bean sprouts, almonds and sunflower seeds, iceberg lettuce and alfafa sprouts. 1.5 units NR

3pm BS 3.5 Oh no! Forgot that I generally need one unit less than I think at lunch time! Ate a sugar tablet and a banana.

7pm dinner BS 4.6 Not very hungry for some reason. Just nibbled on some vine tomatoes and green salad. No insulin.

8pm 4 units levemir

bedtime BS 7.3

See you tomorrow

Hi Claire

On day 28, sounds like you had a night time hypo to me (the headache is the real giveaway, I always find!).

It must have been the exercise in the evening that did it. Dropping your basal by one unit wouldn't necessarily help with that given that it deals with your metabolic needs over the entire 24 hour period...

Also been meaning to ask for ages: what is a cuspamber? Is it cuspamber or something I've never heard of!?!

Hi LadyJ

How are you?

Was just wondering what you were talking about, then noticed!!! c-u-c-u-m-b-e-r is what I have been trying to say...didn't realise that was how it was coming out. How stupid.

Teehee - mental blanks happen to the best of us. Sometimes when you're tpying away quickly something just comes out without you meaning to!

I'm fine. Finally got rid of the chest infection I had so my BGs are back to pretty much normal, thankfully. Was horrified having so many 10s and 11s!

Was in Belgium this weekend, so a combo of waffles, beer and chocolate(as in Moules Frites) combined COULD have wreaked havoc with my BGs, but my counting was on good form and I stayed pretty steady all weekend.

Cheers!

Day 30...

am BS 4.6

Long live the lettuce!

Ate half a galia melon for breakfast today as had no veggies left in fridge for a nice green juice - now, I have found before that if I eat fruit for breakfast I am more prone to sugar cravings during the day, but today I had the mother of all cravings about half an hour after breakfast. There I was in my traffic jam on the way to work, on craving autopilot and all set to stop at the shop and get something sugary, when I decided to eat a little gem lettuce that I had in my "food bag" (boy, do I get the mickey taken out of me at work for my bag. I just blame it on being diabetic, seems to shut people up!!!). THE CRAVING WENT AWAY. Wow. I know what I will do in future if I get a sugar craving. I have tried eating nuts, eating fruit, not eating anything, but I tell you this was the best solution I have ever found. Might even try eating a lettuce for breakfast along with my juice. Yeah, it sounds weird, but I reckon it would help.

10am BS 5.9 1 apple (wow, usually need more fruit than this mid-morning...the lettuce effect???) 1 unit NR

1pm lunch BS 5.1 one apple, salad with aduki bean sprouts, pine nuts, pumpkin seeds, iceberg lettuce, red pepper. FILLING! No insulin.

3pm BS 8.1 Got that wrong! 1 banana, 3 oranges. 4.5units NR

forgot to take into account that I would be going shopping after work...so walking...6:30pm BS 3.5 Two sugar tablets

7:30pm dinner BS 4.4 delicious salad with vine tomatoes - had been waiting for them to get really ripe and it was worth it. Also, courgette, spinach, pepper and two dates. 1.5 units NR

8pm 4 units levemir

Bed BS 6.9

Well...so yesterday was day 30.

I had intended to post for a month, so I guess it ends here...

I would encourage anyone fairly newly diagnosed to keep some kind of diary like this as it has really made me look at my BS management closely and helped me to see problem areas. And doing it on this forum has meant that I have received suggestions from others on how to improve things - much appreciated, thank you to those who have helped me :D.

As for the raw vegan diet - it's great. TRY IT!!!! Or at least try to include more raw stuff [:p] I have more energy, I have definitely lost some weight (not sure how much because I don't weigh myself...but my clothes are fitting much better so I would guess about 3 pounds. I don't have much to lose, so I wouldn't mind betting that anyone overweight would watch it drop off). I don't wake up with a puffy or a pale face, I don't get bloated anymore. I am satisfied with less food. My body pH is moe alkaline. If I eat cooked and/or processed foods now, all these things reverse.

As for negative things...I guess that it is kind of annoying that my body is rejecting junky/cooked things, although obviously it is a good thing really. Just - if I do eat, say, some crisps or chocolate, it would be nice not to wake up feeling like someone has stamped on my head, with a bloated tummy and face!!! But at the end of the day, I do not really want to be eating those kinds of foods even though I like the taste because they really do put your body under a lot of strain.

Cravings have probably been the other down side for me. I am still craving sugar/starch, but that is my own fault because I have been giving in to the cravings periodically. They will only stop calling if I stop answering  I guess I need longer than 30 days to correct 28 years of emotional eating lol. but it would be so worth it.

I will certainly be making this the way I eat, and I will be going for 99.9% all the time. I won't be looking to re-introduce cooked foods, starchy carbs, dairy etc because I have seen how much better I feel and look on raw and what effect cooked and/or processed food has on my body. Apart from cravings for junky sugar/starch, I can honestly say I haven't missed cooked foods at all. No desires for stir fry, or porridge, or rice crackers/oatckes, for example, which I used to eat so much of. So really only the emotionally addictive stuff which I'm better off without. And, though I have some way to go, I have definitely found my BS management easier than when I was eating platefuls of brown rice/oats/rye bread/all those things that are recommended to us.

I have not noticed any particular change in my insulin needs, however in 30 days I didn't really expect to. That is more of a long term thing. I will update this thread if anything significant happens!

Can't believe how many viewings there have been - didn't think anyone would really be interested!

Bye for now, has been nice chatting with you :D

Hi Claire, enjoyed reading your thread, found it really interesting. even though it's something I couldn't do and wouldn't try.

How are you doing now? still keeping it up? Do you feel that you will be able to keep to the diet long term?

Hi Sofaraway

thanks for the post!

Yes, I am still doing the raw thing. Although I would say I'm still in the "transitioning" phase where I am falling off the wagon from time to time, just like when I was posting.

Have to say, each time I fall off I feel worse and worse physically - my body really complains. Need to get that willpower going big time because I can't just throw any old junk down my throat without consequences now!!!

I am still interested in doing it long term. It's definitely the way to go, and I think 100% is really what you should aim for...just harder getting there than I had initially thought! 80% I can manage without effort, but 100% requires beating the cravings.

Nice to hear from you

Claire
