Good Evening, I am a 65 year old type 2 diabetic and as I had an intolerance to Metformin, have been using Lantus Insulin since 2003. I also took 80mg of Gliclazide each morning and at tea time. During a visit to my clinic at the local hospital in Dec' 2010 my sugar levels had become elevated mainly because I was traveling a lot and eating food I don't normally eat and at odd times of the day. At my hospital you very rarely see a diabetic specialist and as usual I saw a diabetic nurse who declared that Gliclazide was no longer working and prescribed Nova Rapid insulin with each meal to go with my evening injection of Lantus. The immediate effect of Nova was a rapid drop below 4 in my blood sugar even with taking just 3 units which I could only control by eating more. So I have stopped taking it and my sugar levels now are between 4-6 depending what I've eaten and when and my weight has dropped to an acceptable BMI. My daily diet is strict. 1 sachet of Porridge with blueberries for breakfast, 3 crispbreads with Philadelphia cheese and a piece of fruit for lunch and a salad with an apple for my evening meal. I also walk to get exercise. I no longer attend the clinic at my hospital as it has now all but closed and am reliant on my GP. But I don't get much response to my questions.
So the question I would like to ask is: As I don't like Nova and don't want to use it, can I return to using Gliclazide along with my Lantus insulin. Please advise. Bam Bam.
