Can missing lantus have such a long lasting effect?

Hi,

Just before Xmas I lost my lantus pen, it was a mix up my end, I have spare pens but I was on my last cartridge and managed to loose the pen not long after putting the cartridge in,
Any how, long story short, it took me 2 days to get a replacement, GP's can be trying sometimes....

Back to the problem, since then my levels have been hard to regulate, if I have 2 pieces of toast for example I'd normally have 3 units of nova rapid and 2 hrs later I'm between 4-7, now 2 hrs later im @ 11... Surely I should have regulated by now, I'm wondering if I've done some damage or if I just need to up my dosages till my levels normalise?

Any one with experience on this??

Thanks

When did you restart lantus? What were you levels prior to restart? I assume you are familiar with DAFNE?

I've not seen issues when I've had to do something similar, but in those circumstances, I try to use Novorapid little and often as background, with bolus for meals.

I missed 2 days, I'm not too familiar with DAFNE I've come across it in the past, but it's not really been something I've studied.
Prior to missing lantus my level shave been very good, and controllable, 4-7 in mornings 4-8 2 hrs after eating

DAFNE is a carb counting course for type 1 diabetics, it teaches you how to adjust your insulin to the food you eat as well as other aspects of diabetes management, the following is an on-line version of the course:

Back to your original question, I don't think you've done any damage, it may take a few more days for your bg levels to settle down, just take corrective doses if needed for now.

If in future the same happens again call into a out-of hours gp service or go down to your local hospital and explain your circumstances, but more importantly make sure you keep plenty of spare cartridges.

Nope, missing it for two days will be fine. Just don't make a habit of it.

It wasn't my intention... GP's (not them personally, the system they work under) can be a pain, but it's partly my fault for waiting til I was on my last cartridge to order a repeat!
I'll stick with some super close monitoring and corrective doses where necessary, hopefully I'll balance back out sooner rather than later.

Thanks

Before you get to your last box of insulin (5 cartridges) put your repeat prescription in, any issues with your Dr prescribing your diabetes supplies then have a word with your diabetes consultant (if under one), they will write to your gp and put things right.

Yeah, I'm under one of those GP's that only give me 1 box at a time.... I'll be making an appointment to see them in January to make some changes!
I'll speak to my consultant at the hospital to jolly the GP's along

Thanks
