Can one stop being diabetic?

My father, 83 years old, is a Type II diabetic, who has managed with insulin (Humalog Mix) for the past 40 years. He injects himself after testing his glucose levels before every meal. Generally he takes 40 units before every meal. The past 2 weeks he was hospitalized twice with hypoglycemia, where his glucose level was below 40 (2.2 mmol/l)

I now have him not taking any insulin when he glucose is below 120 (6.6 mmol/l) and he is fine. Today his glucose was 149 (8.2 mmol/l) and he took only 15U and had a big meal yet his glucose level after sleeping was 40 (2.2 mmol/l)(he immediately ate ice cream and sweets). It is as if he no longer needs any insulin and he has the opposite of diabetes.

He has numerous other medical issues (congestive heart failure, hypothyroidism, hypertension and prostatic hypertrophy) and is medicated with a battery of pills which he has been taking for years. The only change in the past half year is that his congestive heart failure is getting worse and he has started taking Verapress to slow his heart rate down.

Any clues as to why this might be happening?

Thanks!

I just found a number of academic articles on the topic:
Simultaneous Hypoglycemia and Acute Congestive Heart Failure
http://circ.ahajournals.org/cgi/content/short/40/2/209
Spontaneous hypoglycemia associated with congestive heart failure attributable to hyperinsulinism.

People who are touchy.......feign indignation at the slightest thing. Hypocrites, bullies and cowards.
I think we can all speculate as to reasons but nobody can tell you what is going on. Really he needs to be seen by a Specialist as he has all those other conditions any of which could be contributing.

So my advice is to discuss with your GP/Physician and if needed get a referral.
