why when I take my first BG level in the morning it's always higher than when I went to bed?!!

Which leads me to wonder about taking a fasting blood test to diagnose diabetes - is it really accurate?

I'm a bit confused with this

What you are potentially seeing there is something we call the Dawn Phenomenon.

Essentially your body releases a bunch of hormones that help get you going in the morning, one of the effects of this is to cause your blood glucose to rise a bit.

What sort of spike are you seeing in the mornings? If it is 1 or 2 mmol/l more then night time then this is possibly what you are seeing. If it is a lot more then perhaps it is something you should raise with your Dr since, depending on the time you take them, your meds could be running out overnight.

That said I am Type 1 but I am sure there will be some 2's along who can give you better first hand advice :)

I'm type 2 diagnosed 13 March this year so it's fairly recent.

My last reading before bed last night (10pm) was 6.6, this morning 7.9, I just find that really odd.

Hello - and welcome!! You will find your morning fasting may well be the last reading to lower and settle. Many of us also have the frustrating "dawn phenomenon" where our livers kindly "dump" some glucose for us to help us start our day!

My bg are always higher in the morning 2hrs after breakfast down to 5 ish as stated it's a thing called dawn phenomenon I've even tested in the middle of the night and it's still low when I was on metformin I tried taking last tablet really late but made no difference just one of those things

I'm struggling with this. I'm trying different things such as insulin dose ,time I take insulin, a snack before bed if my bg is on the low side etc etc.... So far my liver is winning the battle :banghead:

I find it oddly infuriating lol.
I try really, like REALLY hard to keep my BG under control, but I guess my liver has other plans, and there's nothing I can do about it
