Quick q, can stress raise yr BS levels? Or is it just food! I have been off work for four weeks (since before diagnosis) and due back next week. Worried that my hard work up until now will take a turn for the worse.

Yes it can; blood sugar can be raised by food, glycogen dumps from your liver, being ill and stress, also reducing exercise can make you less sensitive to insulin which can contribute to raised blood sugar levels.

But don't worry about it! :)

Absolutely - my diabetes consultant at least as happy about me having gone p/t at work and thus reducing stress than almost anything else I've done to manage diabetes

It most certainly can, if your a type 1 on basal/bolus you can manage the bg spike by bolusing.

James (T2, exercise and diet) was in a car accident a few months ago. Testing his blood sugar soon after, it was 6.5, at a time of day when low 4's would have been, and continue to be, normal. I think this was quite clearly the result of sudden stress.

Hi,
I found this page really helpful on diabetes.org
[QUOTE
These things do not cause diabetes:
  • Viruses or germs – you cannot catch diabetes like a cold
  • Stress, though it may make the symptoms worse in people who already have the condition
  • An accident or an illness won’t cause diabetes, but may reveal the condition if it is already there.

Thank u all again for your replies. I had thought as much! I changed my job just before Xmas and went full time after 7 years. Three months later I have diabetes, I am convinced the extra stress and hours and trying to raise a young family were all contributing factors! Had an Occ Health appt today and going back on reduced hours for a few weeks! Watch this space! Again thanks all. Much appreciated. X
