Can The Pizza Effect Occur In Nondiabetics? Super Concerned...

I’ve posted previously before and my numbers indicate I’m not diabetic with an A1C of 5.4% and two OGTT screenings at 2 hours of 108 and 125 mg/dL (6 mmol and 6.9 mmol). My fastings may indicate mild insulin resistance at around 5.8 mmol sometimes . I’ve been testing with heavy high carb meals and I’m typically back to about 5.5 mmol after 2.5 to 3 hours . However, yesterday, I had a huge meal with probably 400 grams of carbs and it included a generous portion of noodles (pasta). By 2 hours to 3 hours, I was down to about 5 mmol even after eating all that stuff as part of an experiment. I got some readings as low as 4.9 mmol and figured I was fine . 5 hours later, I tested out of curiosity and my glucose was 6.4 to 6.7 mmol. I had not eaten anything at all. I also wasn’t stressed and had not done anything physical. I freaked out and posted on another forum and most people are saying that was a swing and not normal . Others said that is probably the pizza effect from the noodles many hours late. One person said that with a swing like that, I was trending towards type . The thing is I’ve never experienced a sudden increase hours after eating until the high carb meal with pasta and dessert. Now I am afraid of diabetes and might go in for yet a 3rd OGTT tomorrow . Do nondiabetics experience the pizza effect?

The pizza effect equates to the fats and the protein in the meal delaying the absorption of the carbs so your later higher readings have shown this effect perfectly.

Your numbers show a reaction to pizza (or any high carb high fat meal) to be perfectly inderstandable. I would put away the glucometer, resist too many pizzas and get on with worrying about something else or just plain enjoying not being a person with Diabetes.

Guzzler, I had no idea nondiabetics can experience it and see an increase in BG later on. From what I have read, nondiabetics appear to have perfect glucose at all times. There’s so much conflicting information out there it’s enough to go mad.

The difference between a non Diabetic and a person with T2 Diabetes is that the non Diabetic will get back into normal range easily and no harm will have been caused because their metabolism can cope with what they eat. A person with Diabetes, however, will not return to normal range for a length of time dependant on insulin resistance among other things and repeated higher readings over long periods causes damage to organs and arteries. You had a normal response.

What a lot of crock!

I am not diabetic.

But I get all the symptoms and health problems that occur with all types of diabetes.

They're many different types of endocrine conditions that have normal hba1c. But have hormonal imbalance that effect your metabolism, health and glucose levels.

By the way, your numbers are normal, it is also normal to get higher levels though in and around normal levels hours after food.
You can call it the pizza effect, but our bodies can be effected by all things. The list is never ending.

The liver regularly dumps glucose into the bloodstream at times of demand (like exercise) or about every 5 hours when fasting. Your responses to everything seem to be perfectly normal. Why are you spending so much time testing when you are normal? It doesn't make much sense.
