almost 2 weeks ago my thumb on my left hand started itching for no reason, after a while it was slightly swollen and red, i spoke to pharmacists when i collected prescription and he gave me eurax cream and antihistamines
anyway left thumb has now cleared up and its now on my right hand thumb and first 2 fingers very sore and my hand is tender to touch by my wrist
but the itch is driving me insane its starting to wake me up during the night now
theres no way i can get in to see a dr for about 6 weeks
its driving me nuts

In early days after diagnosis I had a bit of trouble with fingers. The most pronounced was the little finger and side of my palm were numb. I realised the problem when a cockerel bit a lump out of my finger and I only found out by noticing the blood.
I would have to say your problem could be related to diabetes since itching often precedes numbness but could also be many other things.

If the antihistamines worked on one hand (did you finish the medication on it?) but the appeared on the other it could be an allergy. Look at anything you may have eaten that you are not in the habit of having, creams, lotions or even a different brand of rubber gloves. Some drugs can interact causing such conditions but my advice is to make an appointment with your GP and in the meantime take notes on anything you can definitely rule out, this will help the doctor and may influence possible treatment options.
As has been said upthread, you can't rule out Diabetes at this time and the advice I got many years ago may help you too, it was 'do not put any new symptom down to your condition, get it investigated'. Good luck.

Edited to add, this advice was given to me for a different condition but I think it is wise for all long term conditions. I just needed to clarify that point.

managed to get in with a dr, its now both hands
he was stumped as to what was causing it so prescribed me some stronegr craem and antihistamines twice a day, said if no better by the middle of next week he would refer me to hospital
went to collects script from chemist to be told they cant get the cream and to go back and ask reception to get dr to change it to something else, they said it would be ready tomorrow, i begged for it to be done there and then while i waited but she refused so im sat here with scrunched up paper scratching both hands ( i know i shouldnt they feel sore and bruised now)
and to top it off ive hurt my knee, im not sure how and when but its killing me, was going to go to hospital but decided id rather see how it is tonight and go tomorrow
