i'm currently planning on trying for a baby with my partner & i was wondering if diabetics can breast-feed their children? i'm not sure if/how the insulin would affect the baby

Hi Kim.

Of course you can breastfeed your baby. The injected insulin will have no effect on the baby at all, but you may find your levels will be very erratic in the first week or so whilst your body goes through massive changes and adaptations. Intensive testing may be in order.
The are lots of lactation consultants out there and getting the information before you have a baby will help your confidence no end.

THANKYOU wiflib :D thats such a weight off my mind because once we have a baby i'd love to breast-feed. wasnt sure if insulin would have an effect on the baby because i know lots of things can be passed through a mothers milk. i'm going to discuss my plans to try for a baby with my diabetic consulatant at my next appointment in a few weeks
