I've been stocking up on goodies to take to hospital with me and I'm getting in a muddle about what you subtract from totals. I understand how the US/UK fiber/fibre thing works for net carbs but I'm confused re polyols whatever they are. The first pic is for fitbakes bars. The info is for 100g and the bars are 65g. The second pic is good good jam. Again info is 100g and I just want to know what to count for a big teaspoon. I know one of you kind people will do the sums for me but truly I want to know how so I can apply it myself to other things. Thank you.

The good good jam is 4g carb per level tablespoon

As a rule of thumb, subtract the polyols (although some seem to see a rise, depending on which polyol).
So 100 gr = 26 gr of carbs, of which 14 are polyols. This leaves you with 26-14=12 grams of carbs per 100 grams.

Now divide those 12 grams by 100 to get the carbs per gram: 12:100=0.12.
The bar weighs 65 grams, so now you multiply 0.12 with 65, which is 7.8.

So the whole bar is 7.8 grams of carbs (not counting polyols).

I use this jam and that’s the official net carb count from the website

This is so useful @Antje77 Thank you....but oh my did that 7.8 send me in a spin. It was my mistake a bar isn't 65 grams its 19. It has 65 calories I misread.
So applying the calculation 0.12 multiplied by 19= 2.28
Thank you , thank you

Can it be they include the polyols, which are carbs but shouldn't affect BG?
Even then it doesn't add up with the screenshot, depending on the size of a teaspoon.
If the carbs are 23.8 per 100, and a teaspoon of jam weighs 6.57 grams, you'll never get to 4 grams of carbs per teaspoon.
So either Margarett's info is wrong, or the website is?

Going from the information in your screenshot here, which seems to be different from the information on the website:
According to google, a teaspoon of jam weighs 6.57 grams, so let's make that 7 grams.

100 grams have 23.8 grams of carbs, of which 19.7 are polyols. Which leaves you with 4.1 grams of carbs per 100.
Again, divide by 100 to get the value per gram, and then multiply by 7 to get the amount of carbs for 7 grams of jam.
4.1 : 100 x 7 = 0.2 grams of carbs per teaspoon.

Even if you do count the polyols, you'll get this:
23.8 : 100 x 7 = 1.66 grams per teaspoon.

@lovinglife , are you sure the website says teaspoons and not tablespoons?

Even better, the main point was getting how to calculate the carbs in a portion, looks like you've got it now!

@Antje77 You both got me looking at the websites and just to confuse things further the fitbakes website says less than one net carb per bar

Don't you just love contradictory information!
For what it's worth, I think you'll be fine whether (I hate this word, I'm never sure if I'm talking about rain or sunshine, castrated goats, or 'if') it's less than one or 2.28.

I'm tagging @Rachox now, who has experience with protein type bars, which may be more useful than the exact carb count!

Thanks for the tag @Antje77 , I love protein bars, they fulfill my wish for chocolately sweet things, no I’ve never lost my sweet tooth and I don’t really want to! Luckily my blood sugars aren’t affected by polyols. Most of the bars I eat are around 3 or 4g net carbs. My two favourites are Grenade Carb Killas and Smart phd bars, bit available in Tesco.

Thats interesting @Rachox . I did notice you posting the two bars and no lunch on the what you eat forum. I was kind of thinking if I have a wee supply of bars in hospital they would do in lieu of a meal. Right now my lunch tends to be and egg and an inch square cube of cheddar at most so I'm sure a protein bar would hit the spot.
