Canaglifluzin,

I’ve just been given a new medicine by my practice. Are there any good or bad opinions on this. It was either have Trulicity dose doubled or Canaglifluzin, as I suffer from acid reflux constantly I wasn’t keen on doubling the dose of Trulicity. I also take Gliclazde . I’ve had type 2 since 2006. My grandma had it, my sister has it and my daughter has it. At 72 and arthritis in both knees I’m expected to do vigorous exercise. Short starving myself I can’t see a way out.

Hi Pinkcoat1965,

Yes I am taking Canagliflozin 300mg once a day and am hoping to go back to 100mg a day or come off it. It seems to have helped my diabetes but watch out for those side affects, especially the waterworks infections and itching, it drives me nuts at times which is why I want to lower it now my HbA1c levels are coming down.

I am also the same age as you and have the drated arthritis in most joints so no we can't do the vigorous exercise they tell us too, I personally tell them it is impossible for me to do but I do what I can. For me the key to lowering blood readings has been this forum and trying the Low Carb diet, it is working wonders for me, so have a read around the forums and it may work for you if you decide to try it. But please don't starve yourself there really is no need, since dropping the carbs I very rarely feel hungry any more as we can eat fish, chicken, beef, pork, lamb and above ground veg, plus Full Fat Greek Yoghurt and cream, plus cream cheese and cheese. Just keep away from processed anything.

Do you have a BG testing meter? Having one is so worth while as it will tell you what spikes you and what doesn't.

Please keep coming back and tell us how you are doing :)

Hi, Valann, I’m dreading using it because of the side effects. I get annoyed with the practice staff as they talk to you as though you’re telling lies. I’m doing WW courtesy of NHS for 16 weeks. First week I lost 3 lbs, so I suppose that’s something. My sister and my daughter are having insulin. I know insulin is used as a last resort. I know it’s easy to cheat by using more insulin than needed. It’s dangerous to do that. I‘m convinced that having Covid sent my bg through the roof. Anyway I shall carry on regardless. Wish me luck. X

I wish you much luck Pinkcoat1965.

I personally haven't tried the WW but am having good success with low carb diet and losing weight each week. My surgery didn't tell me the side effects and by the time I found out I was already taking them, they have helped but am hoping to come off them soon.
It would appear that getting Covid does cause complications for diabetics.

Again I wish you much luck

Hi,

Im taking 100mg of the Canaglifluzin . I hope it helps. My bg was 6.2 this morning so something is working. X
Hi again,

That is the dose I started on and hope to go back to soon as I had no side effects on the 100mg so hopefully you won't either. Yes it also brought my numbers down but not as fast as they wanted which is why they put the dose up. 6.2 sounds good to me as well. Please let me know how you get on with it. :) x

After eight days I’ve stopped taking Canaglifluzin. After two days I started to get awful indigestion and being sick. I’m now taking 10 mg of Empagliflozin. I’m also having to take an anti sickness tablet three times a day. Ive had disturbed nights and lots of pain. My surgery were surprised at my getting this reaction. I wonder if they took into account my acid reflux that I’ve suffered with since my forties. Anyone else suffered bad reactions like this?

Most of us on here find that following a low carb way of eating reduces any need for medication.
I'd recommend it to you, but do note that as a happy side effect of eating the low carb way is rapid weight loss, those on any of the "flozins" need to be aware that there is a risk of dka so the dosage needs reducing and low carbing implemented only slowly (eg no going cold turkey) at the same time, ie over weeks.
