Help!
I'm an obese prediabetic following a 20g carb daily diet to try to de-fat my pancreas. I have never liked the taste of artificial sweeteners so assumed I would have to do without "sweet" for some time. Came across this product, which says it is a mix of erythritol and stevia extract, white granules approx the same strength as sugar. It says there are 2.5g carbs per half teaspoon, but if they are from erythritol, do I count them?

It's pouring with rain so I went on a major Google search and found the blinking answer myself! To quote another forum:
Erythritol is only 0.2 Calories per gram. It is listed as 25 grand of carbs by difference. In the US at least, anything that is not protein or fat when tested is automatically listed as a carb by difference. Erythritol is a sugar alcohol that is 90% processed in the small intestine. The human body cannot derive energy from erythritol (hence the low calorie count), and it has 0 glycemic impact and load (no insulin response).
In short, there is nothing nefarious going on here, just poorly thought out labeling.
:)
