Can't control Blood Sugar Levels

Thanks for your reply iHs, his blood sugar levels are all over the place, sometimes they are higher when he eats his evening meal and of course what he eats makes a difference too, we have never been learnt how to carb count so I don't have a clue how much carb is in a potato for instance. Also how busy he is at work will make a difference and if he does something physical that seems to catch up with him the next day. For 30 years we had the odd low and high sugar but no real problem controlling it, we only ever saw the GP and we were never given no real advise on what we should be doing at all, I have learn so much form reading these forums, through this we realised his injection site needed changing, it hadn't been mentioned to us before. We have an appointment with a consultant in January hopefully we will get the help we need.

Gosh..... I'm not surprised that hubby has so many problems.

The BIG NUMBER 1 MUST DO FOR ALL DIABETICS is count the carbohydrate in the food that is being eaten. This has always been necessary ever since I can remember and I became type 1 in the 60's and using just 1 injection per day, needed to eat regularly but in precise quantities of carb to balance out the effect that insulin would have on controlling my sugar levels which in the 60's was done using Clinitest tabs and a test tube and later using Clinistix and then onto testing blood using a bg meter which is just as important now as counting the carbohydrate.

You can find out online and by buying books to find out the carbohydrate quantities in food. Collins Gem is a good one and loads of bookshops should have it. Diabetes UK will help you if you phone them. They have done a pdf download all about carb counting
https://shop.diabetes.org.uk/store/lite ... -book.aspx
The carb quantities of food is also displayed on lots of food bought in supermarkets so no excuse really not to count it. Just take note of the carb value and not the sugar level.

Carb count and test bg levels more often and make the adjustments to food

Thanks for your reply, we will look out for these books and when we see the consultant in January we will ask about help with carb counting.

Hi Mrs of type 1,
I strongly agree that you ask your GP or diabetes team to get on a DAFNE course ASAP. I've recently been on a course myself and after 4 years suffering what I learnt has brought my BGs 'almost' always in single figures throughout the day. I now follow DAFNE systems and it has clarified what I should have been doing all these 4 years. The people running the course will also look at the insulins being used and suggest ....maybe...something better. Also, please don't do any corrections after 2 hours as moSt quick acting insulins are still working up to 4 hours. I know it's said that the BGs should be about 2 mmols higher then before the meal but if like me I can be a lot higher than 2 mmols but after 4-5 hours I'm uaually in good single figures.

Your husband will be taught much more than just insulin and carbs.
