Can't cope with diabetes anymore. It took my dog away from me.

I've just had enough, can't cope with it. It's just been all too much for me these last few weeks as my dog got diagnosed with diabetes and two weeks ago had to put him down due to complications. It's really hit me hard and I just give up, I can't get my blood sugar down, I feel worthless and I've given up on taking insulin as it's just making me gain weight alot and eating fat is not doing me any favours as I feel tired and sick even if I eat a small amount and just last week.

We have a pair of dogs in our house whom we love dearly, and yet re-reading your message, and being a T2DM myself, my heart, does go out to you.

I have had 2 meetings with different endocrinologists, (neither of which went well) to learn about diabetes. IMHO knowledge is key to being able to move forward in one's life. Of all the specialists out there who treat diabetics Dr Jason Fung is one of the most talented that I've read. I am currently intermittent fasting and seeing grand improvements in my health.

Don't mix your grief for your beloved dog with what you need to do. Surrender is permanent. Fighting is not.

I'd talk to your GP about that or seek some help from others ... and don't even think about dumping the insulin. Please ... it's just not worth it
 
So sorry for your loss. Losing a dog is like losing a child in some ways.
If it took your dog don't let it take you. Managing a dogs insulin is far different from managing your own. Cut back on carbs, eat whole umprossesed foods and do the best you can. We ALL get tired of it all but we need to get through the bad times. Persever, mourn your dog and clime back up on the horse. It's not easy for any of us and some times are harder than others. This is a hard time. You CAN get through it
 
I am so sorry for your loss. It has obviously hit you incredibly hard and that is understandable. But while grief can take a while to work thru it is time to get back on track with your own health. While you are feeling down letting your health slip will emphasis that and also contribute to it. You really need to get that back on track as it will be an important part of the healing process.

Please put your focus back on your health maybe even at a higher level than before you lost your great friend and use that to help get you thru the grief.

Dogs are one of our best friends. He/ she wouldn't want this for you.
 
@Marvel_champ, your message breaks my heart. I know the pain of losing a furry friend. It hurts and it hurts and even after time goes by and the hurt subsides, it doesn't take much to bring it back. You were lucky to have such a great friend, and I'm so sorry this happened to him.

Given all this, it's not surprising you can't get your blood sugar down. They're doing their own thing ... it's nothing to do with your worth as a human being. (And fwiw, I think dog lovers are generally a worthy lot.) Could you perhaps focus less on the numbers for now? And concentrate on one thing at a time? Insulin is important. Keep that up. Do your best with the diet for now and take it one day at a time.
 
I'ma dog owner (owner's not the right word - she's my little girl) so I feel for you but I'm going to take a leap of faith and assume that your avatar has meaning. I'm a big fan of the Avengers films too. I'm not a comic guy but these films are the best thing to happen to cinema in a long time. Look to your heroes. Look for the strength in their characters. You know deep down what they would do. They would take a deep breath, they would take their meds and then they would take their lead or collar, stuff it in their back pocket and go for a walk. Think about the good times and the walks you shared, reminisce with your fellow walkers - they will support you, but get up, dust yourself down and get back out there. There's a war going on. Trust me we all fall down from time to time, but it is the falls in our darkest hours that give us the opportunity to rise again and face the next challenge.
Celebrate your dog's life by showing your strength and determination.

Now go and make yourself a coffee, get your walking boots on and get out there - now, today.

I feel a whole lot better now as my dog is home and yesterday went to his favourite hill top and scattered his ashes. It was emotional and then thunder struck as I was going down the hill and it felt like a goodbye from him as he was named Zeus. I enjoyed a few pints of lager afterwards in honour of him and a chicken wrapped in bacon, topped with cheese at the pub.

This morning I still miss him, but I've got closure now and I've got to look after his brother Hades the cat.

THAT was a message my friend and pleased you took some comfort from it. I sure would. Take care and do what you need to do
 
Please , keep on with the insulin in memory of your dog . He wouldn't want you to suffer the problems he has .
 
I have a wee Scottie who was diagnosed as a T1 recently. They also suspect my other Scottie (her brother) is diabetic as well, though when I've tested his urine, it's negative. (I'm watching, though.)
I know it's hard. I think we've all been there, where we seem to do everything right (for both ourselves and our pet) and nothing goes right. My health provider has "uncontrolled T1" on the front of my chart because of the way my sugars bounce around, even though I've been T1 for 48 years.
I do my best. I try really hard not to lie to myself about what/how much I eat. I eat mostly protein. My last A1C was 6.7, which for me is fantastic. Then I got to the doctor and they say it should be at most 6.6.
I decided long ago that I would do my best at being a diabetic, but it wasn't all that I am. Let the medicos judge me; I am doing the best I can. I have to have a life, and though it's a diabetic life, it's ME that has to live it!
I ache for you when I hear you say "I give up." I know how devastating it is to lose your pet to your disease (I had to do that as well), but please don't quit. Stay with us; we need you.
The road may be long and rough, but we'll walk it together and maybe we can make it together.
 
My two dogs, literally, ARE my life, so i feel your pain .... i remember how it was, to say goodbye to my previous best friend of 17 years old ... broke my heart and i mourned for a year and eventually had a breakdown, she really was everything to me i'd rescued her aged 2 years old.... Getting a new dog 3 years later turned my life around and i wondered why i had waited 3 years to get another (rescue of course).
I'm only diagnosed recently, (in January) and i cant get to grips with getting my blood sugar down, it's normally between 9 and 6.7 .... i''m on alogliptin 12.5mg and metformin 2000mg (4 pills a day) and those are my readings .... it's very frustrating. Sometimes i too feel like saying "to hell with it", and just eating what i like.

I am in no position to offer you advice on Diabetes as i know little as it is ... but i will say this ...... Get another dog, rescue one if you can (they are soo grateful), i guarantee it will lift your mood and put a spring in your step again. The extra exercise from walking the little poppet will help ur glucose levels, lower your stress and put a smile on your face once more.

Very sad about your dog but you need to take insulin. Talk to your doctor about ossubly changing your insulin. I found that when I changed to Levemir as my long acting one, I did not put on weight.
 
Hi there, I know how you feel about the loss of a dog [ our friends]. I have had cocker spanials all my life bred quite a few too. I lost my dog Ben a few years ago to Diabetes, I remember the struggle it was to get his insulin right, it was a shame to see him in pain. Eventually had to have him put down, went through every emotion going at the time, my heart goes out to you, but like people we can not live forever no matter how sad it is, I believe they have gone on to a good place. ^ months on from Bens death I got another one, I will never forget Ben or any other of my dogs who have died, but I pride myself in thinking I have given another dog a good home. Please look after yourself and in time you too will probably give another dog a good home too . Hope this is of help for you.
 

Yes, the wait is what's right for the individual. Lose one but save another and a wonderful change for the new addition and the owner.
 
 
I sympathise for your loss and am so glad you have had a moment to remember him and reconsider abandoning your own care. Hang on in! I'm a Type 1 and have had to take insulin for nigh-on 58 years, You learn to control it and not let it control you (same with diabetes). Lots of love to you and Hades!
 
I'm feeling better in myself now, just need to lower my blood sugars as they were 27.6 at 8:30am after I had some weetabix 2 hours before and 20 units each of levemir and novorapid. At 1pm I had a bowl of ham pasta salad that I made from scratch with lots of mayo and a tiny bit of fireside chilli jam. Took the same amount of insulin and my blood sugars dropped to 25.6 when I tested at 3pm. So far feeling good.
