Being diabetic and everything about it
Hi, was diagnosed with Type 2 almost two years ago now, and to be honest i'm struggling.

I can't get my weight down and I bungy between 17and 18 stone no matter what i do.
My b/g was through the roof (high 30's at fasting) but it's down to around 18 and falling.
My chloesterol is ... ok .... but still a tad higher than i'd like.
My BP is fine, although i'm pretty sure if i was tested now it would be high.
I am constantly hot and sweating, must have a temp as i look and feel hot and i feel like i'm just burning myself out.
My mood swings are getting beyond a joke, as i'm either tired, sleeping or angry (which isn't me).
And the longer this goes on the more depressed, stressed and frustrated i get; to the point now where i'm so angry at this diabetes and myself (Grrrr).

I eat healthy, in fact always have as my late father had a heart condition so from age about 5 i was eating the right things (olive oil, oats, fish, brown bread, light marg, skimmed milk); not that it seems to have helped at all. I have literally no appetite and generally don't eat at all till evening (no breakfast / lunch) and even then its a small meal. I've never been a big meat eater; do have meat 'in' things, but not chops, steaks, bacon, mince or the like. I don't drink or smoke. I drink about 2ltrs of water per day, take my Metformin and Statin regularly, but i just dont seem to be making any progress.

Q: Is it time to abandon the diet control idea and opt to go onto insulin?

If i do opt for the Insulin is this going to help or hinder my weight loss. I don't want to start something that'll make things any worse - but i know i can't go on like this.

Hi johny....

Not sure that you diet ' control ' is actually working ?

From what you have stated here you sound Hyperglycaemic, blood sugars at a high level all the time. This can be caused by poor diet, too many carbohydrates etc. I know you say it is 'healthy' but I don't think it is.

Have a good look around the success stories posts, the non low carb and the low carb sections together with the food forum. You might then see what I am getting at. My diet is a combination of low GI, low/reduced carbs, low fat, low salt and low sugar. Works great for me. Weight loss and excellent Bg control and BP and Lipids all at good levels. Something like it might just work for you. You need to test daily after foods to find out what your Bg levels are.

Insulin is just a big spanner. There are alternatives, such as Byetta which has an excellent track record. Look at the Anyone use Byetta posts.

Changes need to be made I think. See a dietician if needs be. Talk to your GP as well.

Hi Jonny,
Ken's right, sounds like you need to try another medication, very much doubt your doc would put you on insulin without trying other options first.
Not surprised your feeling like hell, blood sugar levels as high as you quote will make you feel exhausted and ill. See your doctor-I'm sure once you're on the right medication, and get your BS levels down, you'll feel so much better in yourself. Then you'll be able to face your other challenges, like losing weight. Hang in there :)
Best of luck

Hi JP,

I think you are making the mistake that many make in thinking that what is a "healthy" diet for one medical problem is going to the the right diet for all problems. Because something is good for a heart condition doesn't make it a healthy diet for a diabetic. Have a read found the food, low carb and success stories threads and you will get some ideas as to the sort of things that are ok for diabetics and what things you should avoid.

Hi and thanks for the feedback, sorry its taken so long to get back to this.

My diet is low carb, low cal, low taste - lol. I dont do breads, pastas, etc; staying away from the white groups.

I've now moved to a mainly liquid diet (which works for me in the short term) low cal fruit smoothies and shakes, and i can report that it is working. Lost just over half a stone, bg is reduced and i'm feeling better in myself.

I have my nurse and doc looking into alternative meds, but this is a slow process and might take some time to get right. Januvia and Byetta are two options they are considering; Metformin seems to be of no use and is now causing grumbling kidneys.

Doc says insulin is a last resort, which is a big relief as thats the last thing i want.

I feel your pain, Johnny. This Type 2 **** is REALLY pi55ing me of lately. I need to change doctors.

Hi jonny
Yuo say you eat "healthy"
but you have obviously swallowed the low fat/high carb idea. For a diabetic and probably everybody, you need to control the carbs. Either reduce what kinds you eat, or reduce your portions. It's carbs that cause blood sugar NOT fats.
You don't need to worry about butter, just what you spread it on. Equally, why not have cream in your coffee? it's got far fewer carbs than skimmed milk.
Get yourself a copy of Collins Little Gem Calorie counter and decide how many carbs you can handle. the book will help you stick to that.
Sugar is a definite no no, but starches are a problem too.
