Hello. I've been T2 since 2018, never been on meds and have been in remission for most of that time (apart from a blow-out during lockdown, which I prefer not to think about ;)). It occurs to me that I have never let my car insurance provider or the DVLA know that I have diabetes; should I have? And should I do so now?

The only time you need to inform the relevant authorities, is if you are taking medication that could cause low blood sugar. Obviously having a hypo while driving could be extremely dangerous for you and everyone around you.
A diet controlled T2 is no more likely to have low blood sugar than anyone else.

You only need to contact DVLC if you are using insulin. However, even if you are not taking any meds at all, if you have a diabetes diagnosis on your medical notes and you haven't told your insurer, you invalidate your insurance. My insurance brokers were perfectly happy about my T2 but needed to be informed and were pleased I had done so.

So would that mean I should inform my insurance, I am a bit confused, pardon the pun. I cannot find any info regarding the need to tell them that all

If you read the small print - often very small - on your policy, there should be a statement to the fact that you must notify the insurer if you develop any health issues not already mentioned on your application.

Thanks all for your replies. I'll dig out my policy, investigate and act accordingly.

Strruggling to imagine here. My insurance companies have always been pretty uninterested in my T1, though I have informed them. Do I have to tell them if I get

1) chicken pox, covid, flu
2) thrush, athlete's foot
3) warts
4) cataracts
5) glue ear
6) every time I see my GP for anything

???

I was diagnosed type 2 in lockdown and like you l am in remission with well controlled levels. My Dr advised me to inform my insurance company which l did firt by informing DVLA. A lot of people don't l think. Unfortunately it ked to dvla wanting to do a full scale investigation contacting my gp and hospital Dr's etc. It took mo the. Finally DVLA agreed l could keep driving providing every time I drive l test before had with a reading no lower than 6. This way if l have an accident l can prove to the DVLA and insurance that my levels were good. Also to test with in an hour on a long journey. Those on gadgets will find this easier. Me personally I do it the old fashioned way with test straps. Probably cus lm 56 and not techie minded.
